Current Generation NSX Production to Halt at Year End

TORRANCE, Calif. 07/11/2005 -- To further enhance the division's performance image, Acura is developing a new sports car to succeed the award-winning NSX supercar. Acura also announced that production of the current generation NSX will cease at the end of the year due to the extensive retooling necessary to meet stringent 2006 emissions and equipment regulations for the U.S., Europe and Asia.

"We are committed to having an ultra high-performance vehicle in the Acura lineup in the future," said John Mendel, senior vice president, automobile operations. "It's too early to comment on specifics, but the all-new model will be just as groundbreaking as the 1991 NSX."

As the first-ever supercar from Japan, the NSX was created as a hand-built, exotic, mid-engine sports car that would establish entirely new levels of performance, refinement and drivability. The NSX went on sale in the summer of 1990 and the following year posted record U.S. sales of 1,940 vehicles. Through June of 2005, NSX cumulative sales totaled 8,854 in the U.S. and more than 18,000 worldwide.

During its 15-year run, the NSX has been showered with accolades including, Automobile Magazine's "Automobile of the Year and Design of the Year" awards, Popular Science's "Best of What's New," Road &Track's "Ten Best Cars in the World" list. Motor Trend magazine also named the NSX to its "Top Ten Performance Cars" list and touted it as "the best sports car ever built."

Acura designed the NSX as a technological and performance showcase. Among other innovations, it was the first production car to feature an all-aluminum body, chassis, and suspension and to utilize titanium connecting rods. It featured a transversely mounted dual overhead cam V-6 engine equipped with Acura's breakthrough VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system and a variable volume induction system.

Over time, the NSX received continuous updates to ensure its competitiveness and popularity with serious sports car enthusiasts. The NSX has also captured multiple championships in the highest levels of sports car and prototype racing.

Yeah. I hope I like it' we'll all probably be looking at it for the next 12 years lol.

I saw an NSX last weekend, which was odd for my area, but even odder was that it had Honda badges on the outside. I would expect like a younger kid to do that (especially popular with the G35's around here, putting Skyline badging on them) but this was an older gentlemen

O.M.G!!!!!!!!!! I was so sure I would be able to walk in the park with my grandkids and say with a shakey voice,
"You know when I was a kid, people used to drive that car over there."
"But grandpa, thats a -new- car dealership!"

Whew, well 15 years worth of R&D time for the replacement, I have to say I have some lofty expectations.

I'm wondering what technology they will include to make it remarkable for the year 2006. Perhaps some funky rear steering active suspension computer controlled AWD? Hopefully it'll get a real engine too... get some horsies behind that sucker.

it'll be another 'charisma' car with nothing to back it up.

as for rear steering AWD, wasn't that already done in a mitsubishi 3000GT? about 10 years ago? As well as being an option on GM pickup trucks?

This is out of character for me, but that statement makes you look rather foolish.

Th NSX turned the world on it's ear in 1991. It's always been down on power in comparison, but never on performance or driving dynamics to it's rivals. The current NSX-R is a top class performer.

I just turned 3 at the beginning of 1991. lol.

THANK GOD they god rid of that piece of crap.

Man you have me beat by 8 years.

Yes the VR4 mitsu GT had 4 wheel everything. And it was 15 years ago.

- and it weighed about the same as those gm pickup trucks.

I just hope they build something that has a unique honda look to it. There is only one NSX here in this Northern Wisconsin hick town, and almost everyone I know thinks it is a Ferrari. They will argue with anyone who tells them it is a honda.

My friend's 96 300ZX TT had a form of passive 4-wheel steering, IIRC

I was really proud of my BMX back then... lol! 11 years old with spikey blue hair (and yet I turned out republican... go figure). Wooooot! Hey, the ZR1 was teh awesome in 1991 too... and its still impressive today compared to regular cars. But its just damn old, as was the NSX. You can't blame people for making fun of Honda for that. BUT, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt to impress me with the final replacement.

We know the development hasn't been rushed, heh.

Rear steering has been around forever and has never been smiled at by the performance world. The 3000gt, 300zx, skyline, 240sx and a few other I cannot think of had it. All of those cars owners commonly remove the system.

love the body style, what makes the car..

let's hope the new one has power this time, u would think they would want to go after the GT and Z06/Bluedevil, let's hope they do

I'll agree it's purty, and it handles well. But you don't build a supercar and then make it not very super

The focus is one of the finest handling and feeling automobiles I've ever driven, including some cars at twice or three times the price. But if you offered the focus at that price, I'd say the exact same thing as I say about the NSX

It was never a 'total package' car, yet always tried to pretend it was.
