Added a 12v outlet to my 2006 zx5 (pics)

The 12v cig outlet on the dashboard is in an inconvenient spot for accessories like a cell phone charger and dc-ac converter, so I added one under the arm rest.
Parts:
-12v heavy-duty outlet from wal mart auto section
-fuse holder from wal mart auto section
-one ring terminal for the ground wire
-10ft 8 gauge wire (I also added an amp off of this wire. 12 or 14 gauge would work fine)

There is a primary 40 amp fuse a few inches from the battery, and a 15 amp fuse a few inches away from the 12v outlet. (+ line of course)
The 12v outlet is grounded on one of the bolts securing the e-brake to the body.

Steps:
-Unhook + battery cable.
-Run wire from battery. How you do this and where is totally up to you.
-If this is the only item on the wire then add your fuse within inches from the battery, other wise use 2 fuses: one primary at the battery and one near your outlet. I'm aslo assuming you will fuse your additional electronic items.
-Remove arm rest: pop off plastic cover on rear, directly below arm rest. Remove 2 phillips screws. Pull arm rest toward back of car.
-Remove console: Take off shift knob and pull off leather boot (just to get it out of the way). Remove the screws under each rubber cup holder insert. Remove screw at rear cup holder.
-Pull off console.
-Determine exact position for outlet. Drill hole in console. I used a wood bit and cleaned it up with a multi-pupose bit.
-Reinstall the console and determine if any of the arm rest support needs to be removed for the 12v outlet clearance. (I had to remove about 1 square inch of mine with a dremel)
-Install 12v outlet in console.
-Reinstall console and attach power and ground wires at the same time.
-Reinstall screws for console, arm rest, and reattach leather shift boot and knob etc.
-MAKE SURE the wires are properly fused and grounded - then hook the battery back up.

I hope this helps somebody. I love having this extra outlet out of the way and no wires running across my shifter and stereo etc.

Finished. Well minus the arm rest.

Other than your door-routing of the 8-gauge... I like it. Good work.
Thanks. I really didn't find another place to run the wire without drilling and that cap piece looks pretty cheap and easily replacable if I need to remove the wire at some point.

Thats a huge wire for a power point. I did the same thing but mounted mine in the front kinda where SVTs have theres. I just tapped into an empty fuse, I think I used the sunroof fuse.
If you read the description you'll see there's also an amp running off that 8 gauge wire. 400w amp to be specific.

Looks good... I put in a 120 V power outlet that I tapped off the cig lighter outlet.

 <---- click the evil grin.
Excellent install but it looks like it would be in the way, but I guess you won't be using it while driving?
I put the 12v oulet where I did so I can run my 120v inverter from it and my wife can use her laptop in the car when we're on trips. (she gets bored easily :D )

Not in the way at all... but yes it was intended for my camping trips and my excursions out in the desert. I don't have a lap top, but I do plug my DVD player in it.

It's no more in the way than the stock ciggy lighter is...
Where did you mount the inverter?

Directly behind the coin tray outlet... there's a small area behind the dash that had just enough room to fit the inverter.

One of these days I need to go back in and re-check my wires and connections, change out the one blown LED I burned out by accident and take some pics of the install.

I look forward to the install photos!
I thought about hard-wiring mine but it's kinda big and finally decided just to go with the 12v outlet and use the inverter's cig lighter plug.
That way I can take it out when I'm not using it.
I say that now but I may hard wire it later. :D

You should hard wire it and put the 120VAC outlet opposite your new 12V plug. That would be perfect.
That would look really good but I'm not sure where I'd mount the inverter.
It's a twin-outlet 400w I think. A little overkill for my needs but I got a good deal on it.

You can crack the inverter open and gut its innards... that's what I did.

All you'll need to do is mount the bulk somewhere out of the way, like under the seat, and splice the wires from the unit to the outlet plug... then you can move that plug to where ever you want.

I'd worry about cooling problems then.
It's possible it would run for hours at a time on long trips.
Yours may not run hot, but I think mine is a cheap brand from wal mart so I don't completely trust it.
It seemed to run cool on our last trip, but I'd rather play it safe and have it out in the open where I can monitor it.

Could you possibly fit a black rubber boot around the cable in the door to disguise is to look 'stock'? If you intend to sell it also this would be worth the hassle.
That's an option. The blue cable matches the paint very well so I may or may not cover it.
