Well, I was quite enthused about my decision to purchase an SVT Focus... I had placed my order, spent many an hour online and at the dealer gathering info. I read so many magazine articles it isn't even funny. I know all the stats.... all the pluses and minuses

And in the end, it took only one comment by my fiance'. I quote... "you can buy any car you want....I just don't know why you chose the Focus. I don't see you in that car... It's just looks so.... LAME. It looks like a car someone who's cheap or doesn't have much money would buy as a last resort"

With that comment....I had to totally re-think my plans. I'm not the type to fold to someone elses perceptions.... and I don't agree with her about the SVT.... but there is one unchangeable fact.... If you're girl thinks your car looks lame.... her thinking YOU are lame isn't too far behind.

Perhaps you won't hate me so much when you here what I have decided to buy. I didn't defect oo far.

I decided to go with a Roush Stage 1 Mustang. It looks really HOT and is based on a V6 with upgraded suspension with a 2" drop, complete dual exhaust including headers, high flow cats, and flowmasters exiting out the side of the car, a complete body package, titanium faceplates, billit pedals, complete leather interior from the GT, ABS, Mach 460, and 17" Cobra five point wheels restamped with "Roush" on one of the spokes, tinted windows with special Roush graphics, floor mats with Roush logos stiched into them, and special "Roush Stage 1" badging.
http://www.roushperf.com/mustangstage1/cdkred_r2_c2.jpg

The exhaust system added 20hp and I have already ordered a Cold Air (fender well) kit with K&N filter that others have recommended and should be worth another 15hp.

All told, I'll be around 14 lbs/hp which is competative in the sport compact market (even though most don't consider it a sport compact). I talked to the Roush rep when he was doing some training at my local dealership. He said that with the Roush upgrades, it should outperform all the cars on my list in 0-60, 1/4 mile, skid pad, and top speed. It loses out in slolom and gas milage.

My list included: RSX-S, SVT Focus, WRX, Celica GT-S

You're comments are welcome....but please don't flame me! I'm weak...I give a **** what my girl thinks and I REALLY like my new choice.

And yes....it was quite a bit more, but after rebates and financing deals that Ford has on the mustang (including Roush), the payment worked out to be the same, but for one year longer. Effectively, I'm spending an extra $4200 + interest.

What would $4200 buy on the focus? A hell of a lot... Turbo, supercharger, etc. Yeh, I could make the SVT faster... but when all is said and done.... no matter what you do to the focus.... it isn't going to change my girlfriends view of the car as a cheap little hatchback.

Okay....let me have it!

Oh yeh, I did ask... and what I was told was that SVE/Ford (unofficially) killed any hope of a Roush Focus. They were working on it, and were (unofficially) told to cease and desist if they want to continue working with Ford on the Mustang. Ford WILL NOT license anyone to build a special Focus until the SVT is standing on it's own two feet and selling out each year. Then they might allow it.

NO Saleen
NO Roush
NO AEM

Aftermarket parts are fine... but they aren't allowing them to be sold at dealerships and they are voiding the warrenties on any cars they produce to be sold as as a complete car. If a person wants to buy a Focus and drop it off with them... they can modify it for the owner, but they will void anything they believe is negatively effected by the mods.

Too bad! Politics..ya know.

Hey I had a similar problem with my girlfriend. She too liked the Roush V6 Stang wanted me to get it over the focus svt.
I thought about it but the Roush listed for 22,000 and thats more than I wanted to go, and the gas milage isnt all that great.
She likes the Focus just not the back end. But like I told her I am the one thats going to be paying for it not her, I dont tell her what to drive.
But you picked a great car but I dont think it will perform as well as you think, I believe the V6 stangs have only 195 horse power, I am sure roush bumps it up a little, but its still a very heavy car. But good luck with it.

Well, she isn't REALLY judgeing me... she has her opinion about the appearance that is portrayed by any given thing. A mustang portrays one image... a Focus portrays another.

She sees me as one type of person (and I LIKE the person she sees me as) and she thinks the Focus conflict with her image of me.

I'm not all that sensative to the image issue... but I understand where she's coming from.

Think about the movie TF&F.... By sliding out of an RX-7 near the beginning of the movie.... you imediately formed a conception of the person... would you think of him the same way if he slid out of a Tiburon... no matter what he had done to it.

Different cars project different personalities... The personality projected by the Focus is completely different than what is projected by a mustang.

I wasn't thinking about that aspect of it when I decided on the Focus... I hadn't even considered a mustang. But things change when you see yourself in reflected in your girls eyes. I like the fact that she sees me as a Mustang as opposed to a Focus.

If you were a car....what would you be? What car would you want your girl to think of YOU as?

It sounds like you are hung up on image.

The Focus and Mustang are very different cars. (I own both.) For city driving the Focus wins hands down. For serious road work the Mustang wins hands down.

Decide what best fits your needs and go with it. You'll probably have to live with it longer than your girl friend!

I would have gone with a base V8 Mustang simply because of the increased potential. But you could always drop this in the car in the future:
Hmmm... supercharged cobra engine...

But the V6 numbers aren't what they were in the previous gen., so its alright.

(BTW, just noticed there is a little section on www.stangnet.com to www.focusfrenzy.com) There are some gorgeous examples here in Houston. One was yellow with black vynil around the scoop (and the scoop looked like it was modified to actually be FUNCTIONAL... and its lame that it isn't in the first place). But it did look mean!

Also, PLEEEASE buy those Bullit wheels! They look so very sweet on the new stang's.

Realize that some guy with a SVT Focus is going to blow by you in the twisties though heheh! Congrats on your new baby!

Oh and here is a cool SVT Focus wallpaper from that site: http://www.focusfrenzy.com/wallpaper/nightsvt1024.jpg

I would drop that girlfriend of yours like a bad habit. She would actually consider dumping you over what kind of car you drive? How shallow is that?

Also, the Roush Stang is crap. I own a 99 Mustang GT 5-speed that has had a list of problems longer than the Declaration of Independence. Even 2001 owners have some of the exact same problems. I also own a 2001 ZX3, that has had no problems at all. It is obvious that the build quality on the Focus is ten times that of the Mustang.

Besides reliability, the Roush Stang's resale value will drop like a rock, probably even more than a standard V6 (Roush isn't exactly Saleen and finding a buyer for a hopped up V6 model that you want to sell might be hard).

I'd consider the WRX, if you can afford it - fast and easy to modify. Maybe even the RS-X, if you don't like the looks of the Subaru.

Don't dump her YET! Wait until she starts getting older and her boobs sag. Then dump her for a 19 year old student.

You could also likely find a good deal on a turbocharged SVT Focus as your second car heheh!

The SVT isn't cheap though. She probably doesn't understand it. Just because the price isn't $30,000+ doesn't make it a cheap car.

Couldnt have put it better myself. I dont know how many times I have gotten into argument with friends about how if a car costs $30,000+ doesnt make it better than a car that costs $15,000.

I dated a VERY limber dancer for a while who hated all hatchbacks. Of course I was driving, and still am, a hatchback at the time. I realized that although she was very limber and attracted lots of attention she could never love me for who I am with/without a hatchback. Form should follow function. My current girlfriend doesn't care and even likes the Focus (but doesn't admit it in front of other people because she doesn't approve of my car obsession).

Giving someone what they want isn't always the best thing to do. By caving in on such a huge purchase you're conveying a message to her subconscious woman brain that says it's okay to walk all over you. You should have compromised instead. Just my opinion about life, regardless of cars.

Wait! Life without cars!? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Just want to say, who care what the woman says, mine didn't like the svt either but then after hearing about it and seeing pictures all the time she has converted. Who know, but as long as you are happy with your choice there is no problem. But who wears the pant in that relationship? j/k

If you care at all, you will read this post as well:

One of the reasons why I choose the SVT Focus and will STILL choose the SVT Focus over all the others, even though there are upcomers that may or may not beat it, is because my PERSONAL needs match those of the car in terms of utilization, performance, economy and design sense. NONE of these criteria would ever be replaced or compromised by someone else's remarks. I would advise you to truly believe in yourself and your own abilities to make decisions based upon your own judgement and not to let others cloud it (although considering it is only through politeness of yourself).

My own GF would not be driving a car like this, nor does she wish it. But what she DOES respect is my decision and why i am just so crazily monogamous
Image
about the car! No one else would have ever thought I'd be driving this sort of car. But obviously, a lot of them do not know me well enough. My GF does, and does not question my decision in purchasing the SVT Focus. She actually loves me MORE for being so dedicated and loyal to something I really like!
Image

Yes, others HAVE deemed the vehicle to be very girlish or even a "gaymobile" (no offence intended). This only means that they have not driven the car nor do they know about its potential. You can't beat the handling and the quality for its price. Why do you think it's the #1 selling car in the WORLD?

All in all, as long as the car makes you happy, and as long as you won't have any regrets, you shall live healthy.

In other, more direct words, GET THE SVT FOCUS.

Actually, I happen to know a loser who said that he likes the Mazda 323 (hatchback) because it's very similar to the "female ass" and its "bulbous" shape.

What a loser, eh? Thank goodness this person is out of my life!

(Sorry for the bluntness.)

You should have put off buying the car until you were married, assuming you marry the strumpet. Anyway, if she were your wife, she would find bigger issues to be concerned with - - like how you hang the toilet paper. I broke up with a chick when I was young and single because she didn't like my dog. Gee, sure was a hard way for her to find out just how important she was to me. I wonder if she told her friends that I left her for a dog? Would have done the same thing to any woman who didn't like my car too. My wife doesn't like the way my Focus rides - - 5 speed doesn't help either. BUT, she's happy as long as it is the car that I want. That is a true woman. Drop the $itch and get the car, you'll be a happier man.

If the perception is the key for your girl, then just go get a sport bike like a Yamaha R1 for 9,000 and with the 20 grand you saved from not buying the Mustang, you can have your Focus too.

It's funny how that works - you can go out and spend $8,000 on a crotch rocket and be considered "cool", but spend $30 on a Mustang and your just another Ford owner...

Get the bike to please the girl, and then get the car you really want - the Focus...
