Anyone ever hit a steamroller?

Well, I'm on my way back to campus this morning for class. My parents are out of town, so I have been going home every night to take care of the animals. I'm tooling along and up comes a construction zone where they are resurfacing the road. No biggie. Normal speed limit is 70, work zone was 60. I slowed to around 45-50.

So then this guy in front of me starts slowing down, so I feather the brakes. Then I realize that he's not just slowing down, he's REALLY on the brakes. So I mash on my brakes to not hit him in the ass. Well, I wasn't going to make it, so I swerved to the right. (The slow lane was shut down)

There just happened to be a break in construction equipment and no people standing around, so I chose that route. I didn't QUITE get it stopped before I slid into a steamroller. I bet I was going no more than 10mph on impact. The guy on the steamroller said he thought I was gonna make it... hehe. He didn't even feel the impact. If I would have just lifted my foot a little bit to let the tires un-lock I prolly would have made it.

So then it takes about an hour for the highway patrol to show up. When the cop asks for damage done to the roller, the contractor says "I think it might have a little scratch on it". I end up getting a ticket for "careless and imprudent driving and causing an accident in a construction zone"... WTF? What exactly was I doing carelessly? I wasn't following close, wasn't speeding, was paying attention, and I felt like I chose an evasive maneuver that resulted in the least amount of danger/damage to anyone who may have been involved.

I give up...

At least it wasnt head-on.
You have your life, health and everyone else has theirs. It sucks that you got a ticket, but it sounds like it could have turned out a lot worse.
Wow that sucks dude, accidents are never fun especially when your ruled at fault for somthing really silly like that.

Btw "hitting a steamroller" is also a drug reference
so your topic title may confuse some of the hippies.

You know.... that one might be worth taking to court just to plead your case.

...you'll probably lose because they'll say you were following too close, but it certainly can't hurt.

Damn, dude, that sucks. How bad is your car? And yes, do go to court, you may very well get out of it....

Hey! I'm no hippie! Did get me confused though. I figured I'd take a look before it got locked.

careless and imprudent driving and causing an accident

Just about anytime there is a single car accident or you rear end someone, that is what they ticket you for...

Try fighting it, maybe you'll win?

hahaha the title is confusing but the story is...well accidents always suck, even if you introduce the topic of them by saying if anyone has ever hit a steamroller. my car wasnt damaged when i did.
umm why did you call the cops instead of just AAA?? for a tow if your car was undrivable. you hit a STEAMROLLER theres not gonna be damage to that this and like you said the guy didn't even feel it. i'd just get out curse a bit. swear at the guy in front of me. go see if the steamroller and his equipment were fine then drive off cursing.

oh and your insurance probably wont change for reporting it since what are the percentage somebody will hti a steamroller
Im 18 and I've driven a pretty heavy duty steam roller before. I'll tell ya what. I dont think the guy on the roller would feel anything if you hit it going 50 those things seem pretty solid.
WOW sorry to hear this

Dude, that sucks. I heard this story from Justin this morning. I take it your car is just scratched up a bit? 'Cause you know, the Coswagon is for sale if it's totalled...

Not true. Mine was "failure to yield".

Well, sorry for what happen, but good thing the steamroller wasn't moving towards you, cuase you would of had a flat car.

because the long and short of it is that you were following too closely. that's what caused the accident. had you left a fair amount of distance between you and the guy in front of you and/or hit the brakes harder when the guy in front of you did, the accident would've never happened.

i'm not pointing fingers or anything, bc i know how much this sucks overall. i'm just saying that you shouldn't go blaming the system. you were in the wrong, and you just gotta fess up to it. being in the construction zone is just adding insult to injury, though. that's gonna sting.

Mike
ya, what he said, following too close dude, pwnage!

Its procedure for the construction workers to call in any happenings. I didn't have a choice.

Had I decided to skip class the accident would have never happened either...

My question was asking what did I do carelessly/imprudently? I don't agree that a mistake qualifies. And no, I was not following too closely. I ususally make it a point to stay the hell off of people's asses. I hate being tailgated. Misjudgement on braking force? Yes. But does misjudgement qualify as careless?
