Anodized coatings can be sanded off, but it'll take some work. I have a plain cover w/out coating and I polish it with "Blue Magic Metal Polish Cream". You can find it at truck stops. It really brightens up aluminum, even if it is heavily oxidized. Even takes out small scratches. My cover looks like its chromed when I'm done. The polish has a bit of silicone oil in it to resist re-oxidation. I like it.
If you want it too be polished you can always have it stripped by your friendly local anodizer, then polish it and have it anodized clear. Sanding off anodizing takes some work. I know from experience with paintball guns.
