As The Turbo Turns...

Well I tell ya what. I just dont think I'm meant to have a turbocharged car.
NOTHING is going well.

The short history of it is:
Took forever to get the parts together. Fabrication of the piping ran into many fabrication issues. Tuning was hit and miss as SCT was just getting going. Exhaust manifold cracked badly making it impossible to tune. Got the manifold repaired and the clutch had major issues due to bad installation and wouldnt' hold, so had to buy a new clutch (replacing a CM Stg IV with only about 5K miles on it of which maybe only 200 were under boost) eating the cost of the the CM clutch and the labor and had it installed by Ford who let me know that my previous installer cross threaded all my bolts which is why it didnt' work. (Thanks Bill Kenney). Finally having a clutch that works and a repaired manifold I figure I can finally address tuning right??

Wrong...
Manifold is cracked again and for some reason I think I have a boost leak.
Well I am going to have Chillibusan and his buddy Winkty build me a new manifold which I'm sure which will be solid. So I go to pull my old setup off to send to them, so they can make sure fitment is good and guess what I find:

I think this could be my "boost leak". I dont think I'm leaking boost at all, I'm just not boosting.

So lets add this up:
Original Manifold 1K
... (Replacement manifold 1K+ ??? )
Original Clutch plus labor 900.00
... (Replacement clutch plus labor 1100.00)
Original Turbo 1200.00
... (Replaement or repaired turbo 900-1200)

Would anyone else be on the verge of going postal? :D

Thanks Slick for the help yesterday! ;)

Is there any shaft play on that turbo or did something get in there and do all that daamage? Looks like something got in there, thats really sucks man wish you luck.

Ouch!!!
After 2 sets of pistons myself from running a 5th injector and all kinds of band-aids I know what you mean.

P.S.
In your pic, by your thumb...is that blood on that turbo!!!
LOL
;) :) ;)

Damn, that right there is my worst fear. Something getting in my turbo, taking out some blades and my pistons and valves in the process. Hopefully your engine made it out unscathed.

That really sucks that you have gone through all that money, time and effort. It's impressive that you have stuck with it though. Many would have given up a long time ago.

See I dont know what got in there. Everything was on as it should be, I just have no idea what could have caused that.

There is no shaft play, its just that something must have got in there... very very wierd.

Let this be a lesson to anyone who wants to be "different" and do things custom! DONT! hehe

(unless you are a fabricator yourself).

im almost 100% sure tom made his manifold ;)

Hasnt he had alot of problems with Cracking manifolds in the past?

I have his log and it surely hasnt held up all that great...

To be honest, I dont really want to go into Toms manifold workmanship. He just ends up blaming the person who bought it. Luckily the guy who is going to buy the manifold from me is like a neighbor to Tom so I'm sure they can get it working with better luck than I have had.

I bet it's a rogue CARB referee that's sabotaging you for trying to put a non-compliant FI system on your SVT . I went back and was looking through a lot of your old threads, and it was kind of painful to track the progression of a build-up that seemed to start with so much promise. I sure hope your luck starts taking a different direction soon.

Ouch, that sucks. :(

The wear looks so even from one blade to another - I'd expect it to look like that if the compressor wheel contacted the housing somehow. I wouldn't think some random piece of junk could cause that sort of damage. Theoretically, compressor surge could be to blame, but I think surge damage would cause some shaft play.

#15 ·
There's no shaft play and I have a bypass valve that definately works, so I doube it's surge. I just have no idea what it could have been. Kinda stinks though.

Damn, you sure there wasnt anything inside that intake pipe? Even welding slag wouldnt cause damage like that. Something had to have been left in there or got sucked in. The remaining shape of each blade is too identical for something like slag or small debris to cause damage like that.

This is awful man. I am just glad you are not smart enough to stop dumping money into it, because it WILL run one day and you won't be able to control your excitement. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your troubles as I know its been ongoing... Dont worry, I'll give the manifold a good home :) and get the bugs worked out of it. Hope you get everything up and going at some point... Believe me Ive been in your shoes and its aggravating as hell.....But once all is done and running smoothly you will be happy I GUARANTEE that. Best of luck,

Scott

Rod.. intake tubing is all aluminum. And I dont think there was any slag in there. The guys I went to are pretty reputable, but I can't say for sure.

Scott.. I'm sure you'll make much better use than I have of it :D

wow... david. that is insane.

I hope that you get it all worked out and it proves to be one of the most awesome turbo builds of all time.

All this hard work, it'd be a shame to not see it through. :(

Yeah, its weird. The impeller blades are sharp as razor blades. As if you filed them down with a sander or something. No real nicks or anything, though you can sort of see in the picture that the housing does look like something really got chucked around in there a lot.

As for the manifold, though Belacyrf won't say much about it, I will. I was there, under the car trying to install the first manifold, and it didn't even fit. Not even close. It was fixed, then it cracked. Fixed again, and now its cracked again.

I'm getting tired of helping him fix these damn turbo manifolds. :)

Wow.... CRAP!

I know how you feel somedays.

Heh, now you know how I felt with my last project car, so far, it seems *knock on wood* everything is sliding into place, I get good deals on used parts, good feedback from nearly everyone, and everything seems to be working out great, although, I would rather have my previous v8 rwd death machine...

WOW that turbo looks terrible. It looks real bad. Wow, i sure hope you still have some sort of warranty with that turbo. For the price given, Id say no :( What does the exhaust side look like? I take it that its ok? What is your next step?
