Auto makers *in bed* together? Who makes what?

1021 Views 17 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  goldsex
I've learned alot from reading these forums and all of you are experts! So with that in mind, I was wondering about auto makers that partner for one reason or another.

For example, I know about Ford and Lincoln/Mercury;

Chevy and GMC (even though I understand GM makes all those other cars) I meant more of almost identical vehicles that simply have a different nameplate on them;

Nissan and Infinity;

Toyota and Lexus, (and didn't Toyota partner with Pontiac on the Vibe/Matrix?);

But isn't there a connection between Ford and Volvo or Land Rover; GM and Hummer, you know what I'm saying?

Anybody know all the vehicles that have been spawn of different big auto makers getting "in bed" together?

(This will also be helpful to me as I go on my venture of buying a new vehicle next year)

EDIT: I also know about Chrysler/Dodge -- some of them are just obvious, just curious about the lesser known partnerships.

Most of the big automakes own a lot of different car companies.

Ford owns alot and so does GM. Ford owns Mazda, volvo, Jaguar, Aston Martin, and some others.

GM owns Hummer, and a bunch of others.

Just go to their websites and you will see all their brands. Sometimes automakes work together to make cars. So expensive for R&D that they sometimes share technology. For example the Dodge Stealth and Mitsubishi VR4 were basically the same car. Many other cars were joint ventures. Nothing new.

Chrysler has been partnered with Mercedes for a few years now as Daimler/Chrysler. Come on now, everybody knows that...

Oh yeah, and it gets better. The situation is now truly global, and there's no turning back. Fear the future.

Ford/Mazda/Volvo/Jaguar/Aston Martin.
The Ford Mazda Duratec is a new global engine family being built in four countries on three continents.

Ready for this?

GM's new Ecotec engine series was a global effort as well:

From Racecar Engineering November 2005 issue:

[The Ecotec's] design, too, was to be a truly global affair, involving over 200 engineers from Opel's International Technical Development Centre in Russelsheim, Germany, GM Powertrain in Michigan, USA, and Saab in Trollhten, Sweden, with all components being modelled in 3D using UniGraphacis and GM-specific CAD software.

The resulting engine is currently being built in Tonawanda, New York State, Spring Hill, Kentucky and Kaiserslautern in Germany and is already in use in 16 vehicles worldwide, including Saturn (Ion, Redline, Vue and upcoming Sky), Pontiac (Grand Am, Sunfire, G6, and upcoming Solstice), Chevrolet (Malibu, Cobalt, Cavalier and HHR), Saab (9-3 and 9-3 Aero), Opel and Vauxhaull (Astra, Zafira, Vectra and Signum) models.

The residient global cognesceto, Biker16, could blow your mind with even more news, stories and information.

Well for starters, Lexus and Scion ARE Toyota, Infiniti IS Nissan, Acura IS Honda, they aren't separate companies, just different brands.
ford owns or owns a lot of lincoln, mercury, mazda, volvo, aston martin, jaguar, and land rover

outside of this country i don't think infiniti, lexus or acura exists, its all nissan, toyota and honda...i think its just cause we're greedy and have this need to be better than the jones', and in order to do that, we can't drive an 80k ford explorer, but you call it a range rover, and its done...
Then, of course, you get wierd "hybrids"... Like Mitsubushi Raider is Dodge Durango, then there is a Saab 9-2x which is a Subaru WRX (note that Subaru is not wholy owned by GM, like Saab is), and of course, Honda-powered Saturn Vues...

well as of a few weeks ago Subaru is not part-owned at ALL by GM
Then you have VW/Audi that has Bently, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Skoda & Seat.

Also I believe Nissan is owned by Renault.
i think it would be a much more comprehensive list and also alot more fun to mention cars that are actually other cars

like TOyota makes the Corolla which is the new celica, Matrix and others that i don't even know of.

the old Celica and Supra were spawns of each other and the Escape is a focus. know what i mean?

lets do that. list compilations BEGIN!
yeah, most have been suggested here already, except the companies that don't own one another working together.

Chrysler, Hyundai, and Mitsubishi worked together to create a range of new engines that you can currently get in Hyundais and will be showing up in the next Lancers, and Caliber/neon.

Chrysler makes the engine for the Mini Cooper in Brazil. Mini is owned by BMW.

Hyundai owns Kia.

BMW used to supply engines for the Land Rover even after Ford bought them, but recently stopped.

Some Porchse's (I believe the Boxter) and the older SAAB Convertibles, were actually made in Finland by a company that doesn't sell what they manufacturer.

Ford supplies engines for the basis of the Saleen S7, and another car maker I don't remember there name but they are
based in Georgia.

Fiat owns Ferrari, Maseratti, and I believe Alfa Romeo.

Honda provides the V6 engine in the Saturn Vue.

Daewoo is making the Aveo, and most of the Suzuki cars.

Toyota now owns 8.7% of Fuji Heavy Industries (which owns Subaru). This was part of the 20% ownership that GM had, they sold the other 11.3% on the open market.

NEC and Subaru bonded together to make better rechargerable batteries for Auto's.

Nissan/Infinity is wholly owned by Renault.

McLaren is in relationships with Mercedes.

Australia's Holden is owned by GM and makes the basis for our Pontiac GTO.

The list goes on and on.

i thought Ford owned Ferarri. am i wrong or did they let that go awhile back?

The same goes for the Koenigsegg CCR supercar.

Ford never owned Ferrari. They attempted a buyout in the mid-60s, but Enzo balked at the last minute. This is what led Ford's CEO of the time to issue the mythical "blank check" to his racing teams that produced the GT40.
There is no such thing as a pure European, Domestic, or Asian car anymore. It seems like every car these days seems to have some kind of foreign history to it or is found in some other kind car on either side of the ocean.

I always laugh when someone yells out "import pride" or when some muslce car guy talks about how great domestics are. Come one now. Where are we 1960 something? Get with the times already.
Honda-powered Saturn Vues...

Honda provides the V6 engine in the Saturn Vue.

This is interesting about the Vue -- doesn't it share the GM body style with Chevrolet Equinox? And is the Equinox also Honda powered or only the Saturn?

Yes the Vue and Equinox share the same platform and no the Honda V6 is exclusive to the Vue only.Equinox uses GM's V6 engine.
Wasn't there a thread long time ago with a chart showing all the relationships between auto manufacturers?

It would answer your question perfectly I think
^^^ yup there was, but it's maybe around a year old. I belive it was for a school project.
Renault has 30% of nissan and nissan is slowly buying back that 30%..... They are partners tho, nissan is still owned by nissan.... 30% isn't controlling anymore.

In japan there is no infiniti / lexus / acura ect....
I know nissan has what they call "Blue" and "Red" Dealerships, The blue sell lower scale models and the red sells performance models and high end luxury stuff.
