AWD Focus Conversion

I thought I saw someone that has here on FJ, but I was just wondering if anyone has converted their Focus to AWD.

Tribal's car was AWD for a short time. I believe he used a modified Ford Escape drivetrain, from a Zetec-powered Escape. Now that it's moved to the Duratec powerplant, the same may be possible for 2.3 owners. I assume SVT Foci would need to be converted to five-speeds.

wrong!

...im pretty positive it was a kit that was just pulled together, every piece that was technically 'needed', but never installed...and hasn't even after it was sold, at least to my knowledge.

something like that wouldn't be something lost in the archives of FJ, it would be something big and i definitely wouldn't have missed it

but fyi just to solve any other questions, it will not be a simple conversion and will take massive amounts of fab work to do this.. = $$$

the escape AWD is not really AWD. it's FWD and AWD if the wheels slip.

goto the shift it forum and search AWD. that is a really sick thead. basically it's the X Type AWD planted in the Focus. with some modifications it would be very nice. and if i ever get some money that would be my project

#9 ·
its mythical. its only happened on the WRC focus if ford was smart they would put something like it in the focus

#10 ·
I would much rather have RWD than AWD. I wish more than anything the fusion was RWD... Ford would sell so many RWD smallish sedans/hatches if they made them.

and some of us live in the north

but besides that, RWD has nothing to do with this...on with the AWD

#12 ·
Not to be annoying... you would take a AWD Focus over RWD?

#14 ·
I would take a real AWD Focus over a RWD. However, the Escape uses a traction AWD system instead of a performance AWD system. It's FWD by default, as opposed to full-time AWD (like a Subaru or Evo) or RWD-default (like a Skyline GT-R)

Might as well look into the Volvo set up. See if you could find a crashed S40 AWD, remove the tranny (6spd) and AWD system, then try and bolt it to yer ol' Ford.
OR, just buy the Volvo S40 T5 AWD for about $27K...it might be cheaper.
Cheers.

I have the kit that was made by ford racing, it is a

modified 50/50 awd zetec tranny
Escape Rearend
and a custom Focus supframe

I was going to install it but never got around to it because my focus was my daily driver, but i sold it to Ricardo at F2 so itll be used on the track

The kit is over at Bill Kenney's Shop "TriGen"

and whoever said I sold it to someone in the midwest , that was my No Limitz Body Kit, and that Blown Contour motor went to Mike "ilfocus"

sorry those are the only pics i have of the kit

Hypothetically, if someone such as myself were interested in creating an AWD setup, who's the go-to man for the parts and information?

#19 ·
hmmmmmmm i am not sure since it really hasnt been done , talk to Oscar Jackson and see if it was his Focus that has this kit on it

#20 ·
oh yeah i forgot you have to use a fuel cell (thats what stopped me because the set up i wanted for the fuel cell cost over 2 grand installed

EKKKKK not including redoing the exhaust system to fit with the drive shaft

Hate to break it to everyone, but the Volvo S40 is not real AWD either. It's still a FWD based system with a clutch to send power back AFTER the wheels slip. It's fast, but it's still not ALL wheel drive.

However, here's a little known secret:

Ford in Europe sold an AWD Mondeo, that came with a Zetec. It used, what I believe, is an AWD MTX-75. In fact, it was called the MT-75 or something like that.

I don't have too many details, but I know it exists.

I think it would be a nicer set-up to just turn around my stock svt motor and make it rear wheel drive....mmm, add a nice turbo set-up and make a nice 250 to 275 hp to the rear wheels.... I can dream, can't I?

#25 ·
Yep. One suggsetion included the use of the existing 'control blade' rear suspension, but I'm afraid that the control blade trailing arm would simply bow under the compression of forward, rear-wheel-driven thrust.

The reason the front steering geometry can't stay is that a rear-facing transmission bellhousing wants to sit right where the existing subframe and steering rack resides.

#26 ·
The only way to compare to a toe/camber curve of the control blade would be to convert to unequal length double arms.... which if I were into a project of this magnatude, I'd consider it. Copy something that is known to work at the very least.

You'll lose cargo room for sure.
