Well I finally did it and pulled the trigger on a <font color="red">2001 Magnetic Red 6-speed Corvette</font> , and I haven’t been able to wipe the stupid grin from my face all day!!! I spent 30 mins with friends just walking around the car and admiring the lines last night, and spent most of the day cruising the back roads (and playing with features/setup)!

Just about everything about her (haven’t thought of a name yet) just screams power… the previous owner is a great guy and a serious Vette/Camaro nut and had a performance shop here (Speed Demon Motorsports) perform some impressive modifications on the already fast car.

Its sporting a MTI comp 224/224 cam kit (Y/T roller rockers, dual valve springs, hardened pushrods, adjustable timing chain, etc), LG Pro long-tube SS race header, Borla straight pipes, ASP alt + crank pulley, 160o therm, hurst shifter, and a few hours of dyno tune resulting in <font color="blue">385.70 HP and 390.12 TQ (SAE corrected)</font>. K&N twin intake was recently added after the dyno for likely a few extra ponies. 18x10.5 Y2K rims with 305mm Nittos in the back combined with SRTD and active handling II help keep the power under control.

The interior is already pretty sweet with power/memory everything, heads up display, digital readout for just about every function on the vehicle, dual climate control, removable top, etc… but he again kicked it up a notch with some powerful ICE. Chris Pate from Audio Video installed a custom body-color painted fiberglass box and amp rack housing a 15” sub and three big amplifiers on these glass plates that light up blue at night. Alpine headunit and Polk speakers w/ remote tweeter replace the stock Bose system. He even had a DVD player (in place of the passenger visor was a flipdown LCD), but I had him pull that out for a reduced price as I didn’t see the value with just one passenger.

Whew… well, hopefully this doesn’t come across like some lame bragging post… Just looking for someone that can help me justify now having to work overtime and eat ramen noodles for the next year!!!

I’ll try to throw up some quick digi-pics tonight!

Dude, that is freakin' amazing. You go from a FOCUS to a VETTE! WTF!
Image

That's so awesome man. Better yet, you ended up getting an ALREADY MODDED Vette. What luck? Have you ever driven a stock one to compare the performance? I'm sure it's much quicker, but just curious.

Also, what did you pay for it, if you don't mind me asking...

Anyway, PLEASE POST SOME PICTURES ASAP! Sounds like a very hot car. Nice choice.

Find a good Corvette forum yet?

Awesome choice Ducman69!!!

And it sounds like it certainly will kick butt with all of those mods on it.

Enjoy.

it'a probably faster than a zo6.

Yeah it is. He is definitely pushing way over 405hp crank hp.

Ain't nothing wrong with the Focus!

Totally different type of car, and if I can afford it I'd like to keep the Focus as a daily-driver for quick sprints around, grocery shopping, or big loads (can fit a bunch since I pulled the rear seats and installed a flat aluminum floor).

I've been searching for Vettes for a while, so I've gotten to test drive quite a few (along with 350Zs, MCoupe, Miata). All the C5s were PLENTY fast, but even a stock 2002+ Z06 won't pull as hard as this one since they put down ~340whp (rated 405hp crank)and have less sticky tires.
Image
I'd estimate she's making about 460 crank horsepower, which isn't shabby for naturally aspirated. But then again, a Z06 has a very smooth idle, reasonably quiet exhaust, and doesn't require 30 seconds of idle time to warmup at each startup.

I'd rather not say how much I paid, but they are a great bargain right now considering new ones are available for $13K off MSRP (with $4K customer loyalty if you own another Chevy). This is because of the new 6th generation Corvette release (which is simply an AMAZING vehicle... you have to read about it... the C6 Z06 will make mine obsolete heh) and it pushes down used Vette prices to the point where it kills the competition in bang/buck ratio.

The sweet thing on the trip home was to put her on cruise control in 6th gear and see ~30mpg listed on the display on the flat sections... I know they tuned the AF quite a bit with the dyno time, but its still surprising.
Image
Not that it makes it a good daily driver because of that, since just about any incline is too high to traverse w/o taking it at an angle, heh.

Got some pics!!! I'll try to take a pic of the glowing amp rack at night.

I envy you... That is one SICK-ASS CAR! You are very lucky! I'll eat ramen and Mac & Cheese for years to get the keys to a car like that!

Thank you for the compliments guys!

I knew car guys would understand... everyone else reminds me what a horrible investment it is!

z06 has a better suspension then stock, so I heard...
Yup, definitely more sporty. There are three suspension options on Vettes. There is the base, the Z51, and the magnetic ride suspension (I dun gots dat).

Z51 is the 'race' suspension sporting stiffer conventional dampers, springs, and larger front/rear swaybar. I believe the Z06 essentially uses a Z51 suspension, but the rear sway-bar is a little bigger due to different weight distribution on the hardtop.

The magnetic ride suspension option uses the 'softer' base suspension springs and swaybars, but has special large dampers that work with a computer and electric current to change dampening on the fly (adjusts about every inch at 70mph). In addition, the mag ride allows you to adjust the range of stiffness it should apply via a 3-way switch by your armrest.

Image

The traditional stiffer Z51 suspension does pull better lap times and slalom speeds, but the magnetic ride is much more comfortable on touring mode and confidence inspiring on your typical crappy public roads since almost nothing upsets it. It can actively adjust each damper almost instantly to soak up big dips and humps "better" than traditional dampers (which will either bounce or slam depending on the stiffness). So "better" is subjective.

Here is a website with some information about it:

*Note it says its new for 2003, but it was actually just modified in 2003... now new.*

stuck with those amps, i see.

i have to admit, that is a nice setup in the trunk. very nice.

as for the car it's sitting in, i just have to say this

i'm ecstatic for you. i really really really want a c5 (and a c6, etc). and ... well, words dont describe this.

btw, do the 01's have the vette plate btwn the rear tailpipes? i know the 97-99 didn't, and thought it became standard.

[car envy]I don't like it! No room for luggage!

Hehe, looks awesome. So now you have a clean turbo focus with h&r coilovers and a clean worked vette with a sweet system. I hate you.

and, obviously, he lives where it doesn't snow.

Actually, I went to his house with the full intention of pulling them... BUT then I looked really closely at the amp rack and (like an idiot) realized I had forgotten to ask how tall the amp rack is! The installer had to make the top rack only a few paperwidths higher than the top of the amps underneath it, so that it can clear the removable rooftop that goes in the trunk. I had no idea how tall the Infinity and JBL amps were (the only ones I can get a hookup on), and he dropped his price considerably on the spot. Oh well, thank you for your help in the other thread though!

No, I'm looking into picking one of those up... probably one that says Z06 on it, along with chrome grill taillight covers.
Image
JK, they do make sweet regular Chevy ones.

I'm also considering buying rollerblades for the front bumper... I'm not kidding! Vettes are so low that there are special well... little wheels that you can get that attach to the front metal scrape gaurds. Vettes even have stock height adjustment and mine can go lower, but then I'll have to swerve if someone drops a pencil on the road.

I'm also trying to find a little custom fabrication shop here in town... there really is NO space in the back with the audio equipment, but it can hold the roof w/o issue. My thought process was that I could have a similar grate "basket" made that could clip into the mounts that solidly hold the roof, for the times I want to head to the grocery store or need to hold a small amount. For the rest I unclip it and leave it in the garage on a hook.

Something like this, but nicer looking and powdercoated to match the car (unless you guys have better ideas):
