CAI vs. SHORT RAM intake

I don't think you will be able to tell by looking at those pics. I think those are generic images. I have a Steeda Short Ram, and it is just that. Short. The "cold air intake" is going to have a bunch of piping to relocate the filter down in the compartment (I think behind the headlight or all the way down behind the foglight.)
I think its a good, easy mod. Drawbacks: cold air can suck up water but you can get a bypass thingy and some folks complain about sucking in hot air with a short ram. Some of the short intakes have a heat sheild type thing to seal out the hotter air. Mine doesn't but it still sounds mean and works just fine.

cool i've heard the Short ram sound cool. Is there any Proformance differance?

Id say for the best performance for the svtf, just put a new panel filter in such as the ITG from focus sport or K&N. Or just get the Focussport filter/heatshield combo.

Go to the bottom and its the top choice, for the heatshield/cone filter.

Or if you just want the new panel filter.....

I do not have one, but the cool-flo will probably give you the best power, and it has a heatshield so it blocks some hot air, I assume its pretty easy to hear since it is an open filter after all.

*read what I said in the other post also*

yeah i was just reading it...i like the sound of the cool-flo. but, i hope to hear some more on the others first. im curious about the short ram because of the water we get in auburn and Sacto.

Thanks for the input

Shortram is good, until the engine heats up and then your power is gone. I remember, back when I had a shorty, after the engine got warm, the filter was so hot you could barely keep your hands on it, and the car felt like it lost a good amount of power.

hmmmm i dont' like the sound of that. im slightly psycotic on the road and a loss of power in order to gain a little sound is not what i want...SO...shift.. lets compair the AEM CAI to the cool-flo.

I've hear the AEM has a power loss below 3K RPM. does the cool-flo suffer this tragic fate?

Nope, any intake that keeps the stock maf housing will not cause a false air reading.

And honestly, the cool-flo filter looks sick lol. If I could go back Id probably get the cool-flo because of the way the filter looks, although Im very happy with the ice-mans power/fit.

i have had both cold-air intake and a short ram. i love my short ram due to the fact that water cant get to it. the cold air is a great thing but if you get one be sure to buy a bypass valve for it. if you want some performance get a throttle body with your intake. i have a c-f-m throttle body and i love it. the throttle response is crazy and it makes it sound that much better also.

And... the saga continues. The Cool-flo is a shortram with a heatshield, and a great filter. The best of both worlds, no water ingestion and a heatshield. And yea the throttle body does make the car alot more fun to drive along with making the intake much louder. Ive had the throttle body on the car for like 5-6 years.

yeah i have a huge laundry list of wish list mods. heat wrap on my headers, some sort of intake system...thus "The Saga" haha...and a TB. + much, much more. The TB i want is offered by Steve at Tously. Its the stage two ported 65 MM. $$$ Damn you Responsiblilty!!! Damn YOU!!

yeah the throttle is so touchy with a throttle body but ou get used to it quick. you will love it when you get it. i cant wait to get back from iraq so i can continue to wprk on my zx5. i am planning on a turbo setup, new exhaust(#3), and a lot more body work.

You're the second Focus owner i know over seas...stay safe...

What TB do you have on it and what Intake?

Really the only TB 65mm still made is made by c-f-m. Focus central used to make one, which I have(limited purple edition omg) but they have since went out of business.

i have the c-f-m 65mm throttle body and the aem short ram air. yeah i am tired of being in iraq this is #3 for me over here so fun fun fun. but i ouldnt trade my job for anything.thanks and you stay safe there too.

FS Cool Flo.

Done.

-Good power
-No chance of engine sucking in water (gigantic on my list, and it should be on yours)
-Shield reduces like 70% of the heat, PLUS you can leave the stock snorkel on so it only gets cool air from the grill
-Sounds cool
-Good value

I would probably never go with a CAI unless I: had a sock on it to keep water out, had a bypass valve too, and had a shield. It just ain't worth the cost of a new engine.

yeah i don't like the whole water thing either. the set up i guess im looking for is also taking in concideration the TB i want. So...i wonder how the two intake systems compair to eachother when paired to the Ported 65MM offered by Tously. or does the pairing not matter?

I don't own a zetec but do zetecs have a slash guard under the car? it can be used to protect the CAI from water like we duratecs use. It doesn't protect if the water is over 1 foot deep but less than that, its safe.

I dont think so but there is a space large enough for the filter to sit right behind the SVTF fog lamp....
