didn't a lot of people have problems with the Bomz though?

Everyone that I know personally.
The lower brackets are known to break, most likely because they tighten the brackets too tight. If you install them and they are nice and loose, you shouldnt have any problem.

other than that bracket, I didn't have a problem with mine. I just was too nervous with the cai and the large standing puddles we get on the highway arond here. last thing I want is to sputter or stall on the wighway with these idiots running around here.
Get an Air Bypass valve if you get the AEM, its worth the $50 bux for it. I drove home the day I installed it w/ a crazy amount of rain coming down and I didn't have a problem, I've had it in for 2-3 months now with a crap load of rain here in Jersey and I've been fine...I think if you submerged your car in a pool, then started it, you'd ahve problems, but daily rain driving, its just fine. And if you have the factory splash guards, you've got even more protection from splashage from the wheels. Besides, its so hot in there, that if any water made it up past the ABV, that it would evaporate from the heat.

Go with the AEM, its worth the money to get a real product then a knock-off.
cheapest iv personally found is summit racing. they got them for 259.

not sure on shipping though, i live rite down the road from there and im just gunna go pick mine up

Just check on ebay every now and again. I got mine here and i'm pretty sure it's the cheapest retailer out there:

As for the bypass I wouldn't bother. If you just drive in rain you will not hurt anything. If you drive throuh a puddle that submerses the filter though you're in a heap of trouble. That's when the bypass works. I'd just save my money, because I've never had my front bumper under water.
I say spend the extra money and get the AEM. As the old saying goes "you get what you pay for."

I was in your same position about 2 months ago when I was looking for a polished AEM CAI. Cheapest place I found was Coximport.com. They have it for $237.92 (free shipping since it is over $100, but that is without the bypass valve. I don't really know what to tell you about the bypass valve. I think that it is good insurance to have, but I didn't install it because on my automatic there was no room to put it except where it would easily be seen and I didn't want to look at that ugly thing...hehe. I haven't had any problems without it so far....knock on wood. I *heard* that with it you lose a tad bit of the Hp gain, but who knows. If so probably not enough to really feel. If you don't get the bypass valve I would suggest at least getting some kind of splash shield.

No power loss with the bypass. It stays closed unless you have a vacuum in the intake (ie water is being sucked in) adn then the flaps open to allow air to pass. It's a waste of money and effort unless you drive through puddles that will submerge your filter. Water is too heavy to be sucked up otherwise.
