Chinese Motorcycles

Just wondering what everyones thoughts were on these Chinese motorcycles that are slowly entering the market. I have actually been thinking about picking one up. My father purchased a Geely Retro Scooter for $650 shipped and he loves it! He has already put 465 miles on it and he only works 5 miles away from home. He loves the thing. Yes its not that fast and that spectacular but gets the job done and CHEAP!

Now I know we should be buying Chinese but realistically I wont be buying a bike that costs $6k or so but I can get a brand new Chinese bike for $1k.

Anyways just wondering what everyone thinks about these things and what the thougts are about the 110 and 250cc engines coming from companies like...
Zongshen
Hyosung
and more

*edit* Just found this one on ebay too....

Cycle World did a study on them and found out ....they were cheap. The quality was low, the performance was low, the safety was low. And not just low, the worst of out any vehicle they tested it with.

My feelings are there are better USED bikes that won't devalue the millisecond you sign on the dotted line. Plus I'd also worry about getting repair parts for it.

For some reason, I envision these bikes being something that will work really well...

...for a short while.

Then, twenty years down the line, if the damned things are still running, they'll be worth at least as much as you paid, if not a whole lot more. Museum pieces, if only because the Chinese/Koreans made crap bikes and dropped out of the market as soon as they entered, or these bikes represented to the motorcycling world what a 1994 Hyundai represents to the automotive world (a first attempt that failed miserably, only to be followed up by a stellar effort).

Either way, it should be interesting.

I was reading about one too and they called it an utter POS. Wish I could remember the name, it was a cruiser called the something 1300, but the 1300 referred to the oil-displacement, not the CCs like the rest of the world... actual displacement was like 250cc or something like that! :D

I would get a quality Japanese USED bike way before I put my butt on a new Chinese bike.

Any more info on that? Street legal? Is it considered a scooter?
I wish...it seems like a great deal to just get around town for chores and work.

*edit* I sent an email to the guy selling them and asked if he could take a picture of one standing next to a person.

The thing to do would be buy one with the 49cc engine, register it as a moped, then swap in the 110cc engine.

From what I gather it is about the size/power of a YSR50. Cool deal.

The 110cc version would have to be registered as a motorcycle, most (if not all) states require 50cc or less for moped status.

just get a really old jap bike/scooter. i have a yamaha scooter from 1985, it's incredibly reliable.

one of my friends has a geely (one of the best chinese scooters) and the quality is laughable, and the dealer support is non existant, so you'll never be able to get parts.

i can still get a ton of parts from yamaha for the scooter and it was made in 1985! think about that when you're buying your cheapo chinese special

I've thought about getting a Hyosung Comet. Hard to say what the long-term reliability of them is, but if it's on a par with the Hyundais they build now, it should be OK. I've seen a couple reviews in motorcycle mags - they seem to have decent build quality, too. On the other hand, I could find a bigger Japanese bike for less money on the used market (or a new Ninja 250 at the same price) and be more certain of being able to find spare parts.

Chinese bikes are another story. Cycle World tested a Vento (the company insists it's not Chinese, but it is assembled in Texas from Chinese components, so expect similar build quality) an issue or so ago and reported it was shipped with rust already on several parts and many other build quality issues. I've made a policy of not buying anything from Communist China if quality or durability is an issue, as I've had way too many Chinese-built things (mostly tools) fail on me.

how close is it?
If you mean between the Suzuki and the Hyosung, they are similar but not really a "copy". I have read some pretty decent reviews on the Hyosungs.

The Hyosung looks more like the later SV650 overall, but its frame design is closer to the 1st-gen SV650 frame.

Which one? If the seat height is 29" high, that is the same as a 250cc Ninja.

im gonna gonna email the guy from the ebay auction....... the one listed above..... i mean for that kind of price i cant go wrong! lol even if it only runs HALF the time...

...my original plan was to buy a modded aprilia rs 50 bored to about 80 CC's.... those bikes are just so much fun and yet inexpensive and small

#25 ·
I think the one in the above eBay auction is smaller than the Aprilla or a YSR50. I think the total height of that bike is 29" not the seat height. I think seat height on the Aprilla is like 31", so it is a bit smaller.

The build quality on the Chinese bikes is, well Chinese. Some day they will be great, I'm sure. Right now they are cheaply made with cheap material. They would have to be considered disposable. Metal is not real good, plastic is thin and brittle, sort of what we got from Japan 40 years ago. Look at the wiring on a Chinese bike. Plug wires on the one's I've seen wouldn't last on a lawn mower.
That being said, I have a Vento I use as a pit bike. Parts are really cheap.

Speedo is um...optimistic at best. 40 indicated is more like 30 mph.
