Clear coat on flat black?

I am thinking of painting something flat black, and I'm wondering if I can clear coat it, or will it lose it's "flatness"?

no one or 2 light coats should kill it and also give it some more protection

anything more or heavy coats will probably ruin the effect

If I am not mistaken(which I may be) they make a flat clear(like a protector coat) that all those street rods use on those old cars for that flat effect.

Bingo! Hit it on the head. If I recall correctly, any clear can be made matte (or flat, call it what you will) by adjusting your mix ratio.

I can talk to some people and see what the mix ratios would be for some different clearcoats. They'll all be PPG, but they make a few different clearcoats.
Yes you can buy matte clear. Works very well.
I was thinking of doing this on my CF hood. But was leaning more towards teh Chrysler Semi. Not as bold.
Not sure that you want to go there, but.....

I once read an interview with one of the primary artists responsible for 'nose art' on WWII bombers.
He had to flatten his own paint, cause you don't want glossy paint on a bomber. (duh!)

The way that he would flatten it was to pee in it... yes... urine will (or would) flatten paint.

Not sure if you'd want too, or if it would even work on modern paint formulations, but hey... give it a shot!

Does anyone know of a manufacturer that sells matte clear coat in a spray can? I don't have a spray gun, or anything?

There is an addative that you can get for most brands of clear coat that will cause it to flatten. I know PPG and House of Kolor have this available. You can get it at most auto paint supply stores or you can check out http://www.autobodysupply.net/ That is where I get most of my supplies.

They dont carry it.

Go to your nearest automotive paint store and they will sell you a spray paint can full of matte clear.
