Clunking from rear of car?

1627 Views 11 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Smurf
Over the past couple weeks I've noticed a clunking noise at times coming from the passenger side of the car. I thought it was fron the front end, but after listeing to it closely I think its from the rear of the car. I dont get it all the time..mostly at lower speeds and when going over bumps. Any ideas what to look at? I'm going to get under it tommorow afternoon to take a look-see

i have the same clunking in the rear only over like speed bumps and stuff almost sounds like the rear dampers are loose or something.

Stock or aftermarket shocks?
I took mine in for a clunking... dealer replaced a rear shock and a front swaybar endlink. Made it better, but didn't go away completely.
Do a search for P51 shock shims. He sells or used to sell a set of delrin spacers for the rear which help alot to remove the clunking.
Same problem here, going to the dealer with it, and other rattles.
I have the same issues, I found that my front sway bar links have some play in them and I plan on replacing them to fix the problem

Yeah thats the problem I found...I couldnt find anything loose in the back
Check your rear hatch....it gets loose and the hatch actually "clunks". Wrap some electrical tape around the latch or unscrew the rubber stoppers (at each corner of the top part of the hatch) a little to tighten it up. I did both and it stopped completely.
Of course you could have suspension issues, but this one is cheap and easy to check.

Good Luck
My Eibach dampers make a clunking sound over bumps.

Very annoying.
yeah I have the slight "clunking" also...i found that the trunk lid does have a lot of play in it with the rear hatch closed (I have an '03 SVTF 5-door). I bought some rubber feet from radio shack, positioned them so the rubber stops on the trunklid hit them and when closed, the lid is secured. I pass off any other bumpy noise as the taught SVT suspension. It should be noted that after i replaced my Conti Sport Contacts with a set of Cooper SLE Sports, road noise was drastically less.

try gutting your liftgate.... a slight "clunking" would be the least of your noises!
