Compass problem

My parents ahve an 03 ZTS and my dad tried mounting a compass from the rear view mirror, but it wont move. I believe it is stuck on West. He tried several others and even tried in my car and all the same thing. Does anyone have any kind of explanation for this? I would assume there is a magnetic force somewhere near it, but cant find anything. We are lost, please help.

Electrical current causes magnetic fields. Anytime you have current flow through a wire, a magnetic field is produced. Thus when the car is turned off, the compass should swing freely. I'm actually in the process of installing a compass in my car (its getting a permanent dash mount) and I'll let ya know how it works for me
