The flares he has goes over the stock fenders. He wants to take off the flares, cut down the stock fenders to make room so he can poke the wheels flush with the flares.

That's why I haven't done mine yet. The rears are double walled and you'd have to do quit a bit of extra work to cut them and get them sealed right.

I've thought about just saying to hell with it and just cutting them, but I know I wouldn't be pleased with the outcome. Besides that, I plan on running 16's when I finally get the money to buy wheels so I won't have to worry about rubbing under load in the middle of the apex.

The rears are cut the same way as the front... an electric jigsaw like the one in the picture makes quick work of it.

When you're done, you need to take a hammer to anything else that might stick out.

Since the flare covers SO much area, you can really cut as much as you like. I think I cut around 1 1/2 to 2" from the rear. A strip of door strip like they sell at the local Pepboys can slide over the cut.

Not only are our fenders cut, the entire backside of the flares are shaved flush with the inner sections.. because once you've cut the fenders you'll start to rub the flare itself.

The payoff is worth it, in my opinion... fender flares have no point unless you can fill them with wheel and tire. They just make a car look disproportionate without.

That said, these were done for function, not looks.

Here are some more pictures of the cut fenders before flares:

...even like this, they DO not rub:

So Omni how did you seal up the gap in the rear after it was cut?

Some more info from Omni

With the amount of cutting I did (1 1/2 to 2"), the inner panel and outer panel were still flush with each other, so all we did was use a piece of that anti-door-ding plastic that you can buy at Pep Boys to slip over the two pieces.

We haven't really had any leaks or water issues, but keep in mind it isn't a street-driven car... though it does race in the rain.

If somebody wanted to be really thorough, a little RTV first and THEN use the plastic trim would be a good idea.

Basically if you keep your trimming near the greyish area in this picture, it won't have a huge gap:

...and you only need to cut where the tire will actually rub... sort of like how I marked that fender above with tape. The tire diameter is much smaller than the wheel well diameter... and the rear tire only goes up and down, so the trimming is minor compared to the front.

Thanks Omni and everyone else, you have given me a little more confidence to do this just need to order my spacers now. When i rolled my rear fenders i just took out the rear springs and jacked the control arm up till i hit the bump stop so i could actually see what was rubbing worked great and never had another rubbing issue after that. gonna do the same when trimming the fenders this time.

Ok so i got some 1" spacers and test fit them and i think they will work just fine. Had to order new studs for them cause they came with 1/2"-20 studs and i want to reuse my splinedrives and locks. here are some test fitting pics.

This is the rear without anything

This is the rear spaced out about .75"

Spacers are fine as long as you get the required longer wheel studs. It's good to run hub centric spacers if they are bigger than 5mm also, to keep the wheel hub centric.
