From MPH-Online.com:
During the much critiqued "Way Forward" speeches by Ford early this week, executives stood between two clay sculptures of the Reflex Concept from this year's Detroit Auto Show and the Fairlane Concept from the 2005 Detroit Show. This would make one believe both of these vehicles are headed for production. There are other whispers that the Fairlane will replace traditional Ford minivans and run on the same platform as the Freestyle. Yet more quietly whispered was word that Ford might indeed import the much lauded European Focus to the United States to replace the positively ancient U.S. Focus.

It all depends about how much of a panic mode Ford corporate is in to turnaround the company. If they feel they are in dire enough straights they can make anything happen and fairly quickly... and by that I mean '09-10 timeline.bluebyutoo said:Don't Hold Your Breath...
I can tell you that I have heard from a very reliable source that this will never happen.
Again a very reliable source.
If anything, its brainstorming and nothing more.
I suppose that there could be an eventual change of heart but not for years and by then, there will be a new platform and everyone will bitch about whey we get the old C1 while Europe gets the "new improved model"!
But why muddy the waters with Mercury...they are just Tarted up Fords for the most part. I don't think a business case can be made to have C1 ST sold in Mercury's showroom, it doesn't jive with their purpose in Ford's grand scheme of things.focaljet-1 said:My thought has always been, why not keep the C170 for the Ford Focus and bring the C1 euro Focus here as the Mercury Capri? ...pricing issues avoided.
Imagine the Focus ST as the Capri RS! Now, THAT would bring younger buyers into Mercury showrooms!
Well, obviously Ford's "grand scheme of things" is not working too well.SilverSVT said:But why muddy the waters with Mercury...they are just Tarted up Fords for the most part. I don't know if I like Ford's tactics with the way forward plan. They are only hinting at the postive aspects of the program, and being downright blunt about the negative aspects. They really need to put a positive spin on things by building up some hype on upcoming models. Till then, all anyone is thinking about are plant closures and layoffs.
Thats a GREAT idea! Bring the entire Ford of Europe line over to the US untouched and call it Mercury!focaljet-1 said:It all depends about how much of a panic mode Ford corporate is in to turnaround the company. Hopefully this latest "plan" has some teeth and Ford will do some radical things to stem the tide. The phase "small cars" was used several times in the speech so they may be having a sea change at the top levels of the company... maybe even beyond your source, which is pretty good from what I understand.

I've never been into hatchbacks... but I like the looks of the new Euro model. I just wish they'd give us the Australian Falcon...

Then suddenly you'll see Mercury suddenly start outselling Ford....
