Does the Pontiac Aztek suck?

I'm eventually buying a used vehicle (in about 6 to 9 months) that I need to replace my little Nissan Hardbody.

Well, I've changed my mind about 100 times and probably will another thousand before the time comes -- just doing some research ahead of time.

These Azteks are growing on me, I think...??

I can't make up my mind. I wanted another truck with a king cab or double cab about a month ago, but now I've moved on to consider small to mid size SUV's because I need to fit the family in it (soon to be teenage girls) and have it double as my work truck with the back seats folded down for cargo and tools etc.

Fuel mileage is important!!

I can't afford anything new, they've stopped making the Aztek anyway, so I'm looking for 2001-2004 models. Right now I'm between the Aztek and the Ford Escape.

Here's an important question:

I want to have the vehicle for many years to come -- are there any domestic vehicles made now that can expect to hit over 200,000 miles without major problems? Kind of like Toyota and Nissan -- their cars don't even break in until 100K miles, you know?
Am I the only one sort of strangely attracted to the Aztek? Or is this just fleeting curiousity?

As much as I really can't stand the look of the things, they must be decent under the skin, because they have some of the highest owner satisfaction ratings.

...the owners are probably blind, but they ARE satisfied.

If you can tolerate the way the thing looks, then by all means, consider it.

Ask yourself this, How many people do I hear say things like "Damn that's a sweet ass Aztec!", or "Wow, that Aztec sure looks tight!"

I am a mechanical engineer and we get a "Design News" magazine. This month they did a study on the design and realibility of american vehicles versus British, German, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (sp?). And found several interesting things....
But mainly they listed some of the MOST unrealiable and POORLY designed vehicles. The Majority of Chinese vechicles were bad, the one that topped the American charts.... You guessed it! AZTEK er.. ass-tec.....

Yeah, OK; so that one only makes me throw up in my mouth a little instead of coughing bile for hours.

Regardless of how much money it took, that guy still wound up polishing a turd.

Please, for your own good, look elsehwere for a previously-owned vehicular conveyance.

That's because he took off that horrible body-cladding, smoothed it all out with some $$$ bodywork (look at how much time went into the wheel arches alone!) and dropped another assload of cash into paint, suspension, wheels and tires...

From a hundred thousand automotive design atrocities, only one fair example emerges. And boy, was it expensive.
