I'm trying to learn about engines and stuff, can anyone suggest me a site that can help me understand what stuff like "14 DOHC" and 3.1l, etc.

Maybe even suggest a site that has quizes on it.

I4 DOHC stands for Inline 4 cylinder, Dual OverHead Cam engine. 3.1L stands for an engines displacement, in this case, 3.1 Liters.

Usually you'll see MPFI as opposed to MFI. (Multi Port Fuel Injection)

SPI = Split port injection

The displacement of an engine is usually measured in one of 3 ways. Cubic Centimeters (cc's), Cubic inches (ci or cid(cubic inches of displacement)), and liters (l)

The standard Zetec is a 2.0L, or a 1991cc, or a 121.5 ci engine.

I've heard that the 1.3L figure is the volume of one chamber per rotor (thus a standard 13b would be more like a 3.9L engine if measured conventially).

As a clarification as to engine "sizes" or displacement...

Displacement is the volume that the piston "displaces" as it reciprocates.

The volume of a cylinder shape is (pi*r^2)*h... So displacement would mean that the piston moves up and down distance "h" and has radius "r".

You might already know that, but...

The rotary equation is much more difficult, but it basically measures the minimum and maximum volume of the combustion chamber like with a conventional engine.

W16 = same as above, only 16 cylinders

Flat 4 = 4 horizontally opposed cylinders, kind of like a pancake. Think Suby's.
Flat 6 = same as above, used on Suby's & Porches.
