I'm trying to learn about engines and stuff, can anyone suggest me a site that can help me understand what stuff like "14 DOHC" and 3.1l, etc.

Maybe even suggest a site that has quizes on it.

Thanks.

just a couple
OHV=Over head valve
SOHC=single over head cam
DOHC=dual over head cam
#V= number of valves, divide by cylinders for valves per cylinder. 32V V8 = 4
EFI=electronic fuel injection
SPI=sequential port injection
MPI=multi port injection
#.#L=metric engine displacement- 5.0L
###ci=standard engine displacement in cubic inches- 302ci

Usually you'll see MPFI as opposed to MFI. (Multi Port Fuel Injection)

SPI = Split port injection

The displacement of an engine is usually measured in one of 3 ways. Cubic Centimeters (cc's), Cubic inches (ci or cid(cubic inches of displacement)), and liters (l)

The standard Zetec is a 2.0L, or a 1991cc, or a 121.5 ci engine.

I4 = inline 4 cylinder.
I6 = inline 6 cylinder
V6 = 6 cylinders, in a V!
V8 = same as v6, but with 2 more cylinders
v10 = same as the 8, but with 2 more cylinders
v12 = what's in my focus
turbo = using the exhaust gasses to spin a turbine to compress air for the intake charge.
supercharger = using the drivebelt to spin a turbine to compress air for the intake charge.

how do you calculate the displacement of a rotary engine?

As a clarification as to engine "sizes" or displacement...

Displacement is the volume that the piston "displaces" as it reciprocates.

The volume of a cylinder shape is (pi*r^2)*h... So displacement would mean that the piston moves up and down distance "h" and has radius "r".

You might already know that, but...

The rotary equation is much more difficult, but it basically measures the minimum and maximum volume of the combustion chamber like with a conventional engine.

Okay, here is a quiz for you -- I had a 1970 VW Beetle -- dad, bro, and I are working on it -- we have the engine out and it's leaking something...

I ask, "what the heck is that?"
bro says "water"
dad says "must be the radiator"
me "oh"

then they both laughed at me -- why did they laugh?

radiator would still be in the car.

W12 = 12 cylinders in a W configuration, think two V6's put together and wala W12
W16 = same as above, only 16 cylinders

Flat 4 = 4 horizontally opposed cylinders, kind of like a pancake. Think Suby's.
Flat 6 = same as above, used on Suby's & Porches.
