I've been looking around lately for an old car to use a beater so I'm not putting many miles on my focus. One of the 5 in my list is an escort. Early 90 model one I think. I think it's the short boxy looking one. Anyways, I thought I remembered a few of you guys owning one and I just want to know what kind of major problems they had. I've been kicking around the idea of getting one with a manual too. I've never owned a car with a manual and I kinda want to learn on a small car. If any of you guys would like to chime in with some input that would be great. Any comments or suggestions would be welcome.

Just go get yourself a 92 or whatever GT, super cheap, nice reliable mazda enigne, lots of both OEM and aftermarket go fast parts, and honestly the car doesn't handle that badly. Dont get a pre 91 if you're looking to mod it, there aren't any parts for em

That's what I was thinking about. A 92(ish) GT. I don't plan on modding it much, if at all. Maybe Upgrading the stock speakers and adding a cd player. I'm just putting a lot of miles on my focus compared to the other cars I've owned. 13k since late Jan. That may not seem like much to some people but my civic had 100k on it and was 10 years old. I did beat the hell out of it though.

93 to 95 seem as a good cheap cars.
I've had two 94's and two 95's before, all run well, but they were under 80,000 miles.

I had a 93 that I got rid of recently I bought it a few years ago for $600 and drove it for almost 90k miles, the biggest repair it needed was a new thermostat.

I forgot to mention the other cars I'm looking into..Early 90s eclipse, late 80s/early 90s prelude, early 90s 240sx. Out of all the cars I've listed the eclipse seems to be the easiest to find around here. I'm looking to spend no more than 4 or 5 grand. Anyone know much about the different trim levels of the eclipse? I've seen: GS, RS, and something listed as a GST but I'm unaware if the seller is pulling my leg on that one. He say's it's a turbo with an automatic transmission.

the short boxy escort is the pre 91 model, after 90 they switched to the 2nd gen rounder bodystyle, and mazda produced the powerplant for it, 1.8 127hp dohc. The pre 91 gt had a 1.9 HO at 117hp

heres the pre 91 GT

and heres the post 90 GT

the 91-96 gt has a 1.8 liter not a 2.0 see corksport.com for uber modding information.
