Escort Questions... Motor swaps that aren\'t insanely hard, etc.

So, we might get our paws on an (I think) 1991 Escort -- I don't know if it's a GT or not, because it's an ATX, but it has the body cladding/grill like one.

Looks like this car:

It's a low mileage car, silver, very clean.

The SPI is nice and all, but.... I would like some more information on motor swaps... particularly something with a 5 speed!

Will a 2.0L Zetec fit? a 2.3/2.0L Duratec?

Also, what's the good setup for suspension bits, brakes, etc....

Any information will be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

Hey, if you can put a 4.3 in a Chevy Chevette, you can surely put somthing bigger in there.

I will try and get ahold of my buddy. I think that he has done a swap with a ZX2 SR motor.

Since I'm in Cali, and want to be able to drive this bugger on the road, it has to be smog-legal -- ie: a 1991 or newer engine that includes the ECU and smog crap.

That's why I was pondering the Duratec... with the Cosworth intake nearing CARB approval, and several 'internal' mods that are basically 'invisible' -- not to mention the power that motor makes... I think it would be a fun combination.

Escort GTs came with the 1.8L BP Mazda Motor. Its quite a nice platform to use. Its the same motor they use in the miata. Just swap to 5spd and go from there.

Yeah I'm thinking if the zetec fits in the ZX2, which is esentialy the the same platform, you should be able to swap it into other escort bodies.

If the zetec fits then a duratec should be able to be squeezed in there. The passenger side motor mount would need to custom at the least.

Maybe a Powerworks zetec?

Why do I have the feeling I'll be able to hear you start that thing up from my house?

I thought the zx2 SR zetec was just a zetec with a borla, an intake and some cam gears and pullies.

Not even all that, it has a borla muffler and a different ECU than the reg. zx2.

It also has an older slightly different zetec. No EGR but it has VCT on the exhaust cam for emissions purposes.

Thats what makes me think even a duratec might swap in with a little work.

Yeah, theres alot of guys using those 1.8 Mazda motors in it to make alot of power. They are using turbo mani's form Mazda 323 GTX' and Capri XR2's etc... Alot of the suspension peices from later ZX2's will cross over. Use the Ford Racing Tokico strut kit (from SR) with the adaptor kit from ZXtuner.com with some Eibachs made for a ZX2, get a stock ZX2 rear sway bar. Toss on some Energy stuff (motor mount kit for ZX2, Hyper flex kit, ZX2 rear sway bushings). They'll handle pretty nice.

So if this is the 1.8L Miata motor, then a JRSC from a Miata could possibly work? The intake is probably different, right?

Hmmmm.... *scratches chin*

Oh, and I just found out it is a true GT (kit, badging, interior bits, etc) it just has the slushbox

Yank that powerplant outta there most definately... you could get a number of swaps to work... just depends on the time and effort you'd wanna put into it.

Does it have the automatic seatbelts? The only reason I got rid of my '93 scort was cuz the auto seatbelts stopped working and Ford couldn't fix it for under $2200 they told me... and the belt was stuck mid-track... so technically it wouldn't have held me in place anymore.

But I do wish I still had that car as a beater.

If these belts stop working, it will get a cage with Sparcos & belts!

I bet Jeffro could fix them if they did poop out.

Another thing I just found out - the powertrain only has 44k miles on it

My auto belts don't work anymore either but I just took them apart and mounted them stationary so you have to pull them over your head when you get in.

It's a good beater car.

www.feoa.net is FJ for escorts BTW.
