This past Saturday i spent probably the best $15 dollars in my entire life. I got to trek down the Homestead Miami Speedway and go to the Ferrari Challenge.

I knew i would be seeing a crap load of Ferrari's but i never knew it would be like this

This is the first paddock i pulled up to

Image

Surprisingly for someone living in Miami this is the first Enzo i had seen in person. I need to get out more.

Image

It just looks so much more purposeful and nicer in person.

Ummmmm, yea, Ferrari's everywhere...

SuperAmerica Anyone? This is one of about 10 at the event.

Now for the next post to see the REAL Machinery......

This event was mentioned on the website as the "North American Debut of the Enzo FXX". So i went expecting to maybe see one and they might do a lap or two with a professional driver to show what the car could do, on top of that i thought it would probably be gaurded by the italian Mafia.

Well wasn't i surprised when i walk into the next paddock.....

Image

Wait is that 4 Enzo FXX's.....

Image

And whoa, you can just walk right up to them....

Holy Carbon brakes batman!

Image

Full Carbon Fiber interior, ohh and so is the rest of the car of course...

Image

These are being prepped for alot more than a demo lap or two....

Image

Wait.... what is that I SPY in the next few paddocks......?

Image

Whoa, another 3 FXX's.... Total of 7 for he mathmatically challenged :D Ohh and BTW, this is the only yellow one.

Image

More on these in another post.....

Ok now i'm beginning to soil myself.....

I've been wanting to go to the US Grand Prix for the last two years so i could finally see an F1 car and even more hear an F1 car.

Well Ferrari, if you didn't know, has a program called "F1 Clienti" (ahhh Italian). Basically when they officially declassify and retire an F1 car they have decided to turn around and sell them to private owners with full Factory support. "Factory Support" basically means they give you almost the same support that a full F1 team gets at a grand prix. You get a full pit crew, mechanics, and everything else the car needs to run at the track. Ohh and Ferrari of course keeps all the cars (same with the FXX), but you schedule when you want and need the car and they will transport it for you track days.

SOmeone like Erik can probably fill in the FULL details.

On to more pictures, ohh and there are ALOT of these :D

Sorry i don't know the details well enough and since i was in such awwwe i didn't even go around asking. But some of this info is from what i picked up while walking around.

Forground car is a late 90's F1, Shumi's first Ferrari?. Background is a late 70's F1 car which if i head correctly is a turbo.

True Vintage..... 1967 F1

Now we're moving up the years, and this is what it takes just to start and run a newer F1 car.......

Those after this short break.....

To expand on this comment, Ferrari are building a total of 29 FXXs for the world - 1 is black, 1 is yellow, 1 is dark blue, 1 is pearl white, 1 is light blue, 1 is silver, and the other 22 are split between Ferrari's two main shades of red - Rosso Corsa (regular red) and Rossa Scuderia (matches the Formula One cars).

Here's the breakdown by country of FXX allocation:

USA: 8 cars - 1 in Giallo Modena (yellow), 1 in Azurro California (light blue)
Canada: 2 cars
Germany: 5 cars
Japan: 4 cars - 1 in Bianco (pearl white), 1 in Grigio Nurburgring (silver)
Switzerland: 3 cars
England: 2 cars - 1 in Tour de France Blue (dark blue)
Italy: 2 cars - 1 in Nero (black)
Sweden/Norway: 1 car
Saudi Arabia: 1 car
Netherland: 1 car

Photos exist now of the FXX in all the colors except for Azzurro California. I can post photos of the unique colors if some are interested.

Here's an example of Azzurro California on an F50.

Image

This car was originally red, but was repainted this color for it's original owner by Ferrari of Houston. It was eventually repainted back to red after he sold it which I think is unfortunate.

Ok by now i think you can see something. I'm not roaming around with some VIP media pass because of FJ at this event :p . I'm standing in the middle of a paddock surrounded by Million Dollar Racing Ferrari's and F1 cars. This was one of the most laid back events i've ever been to. You could literally walk up and touch any vehicle you wanted. I never tried to sit in anything but nobody else had the never to either hehe. Most of us all walked around in shock most of the time. I found myself just leaning against a paddock wall and watching the crews work on the cars. Then even when you did lean in to look at a cars engine bay or interior the mechnics and enineers didn't care. They would literally walk around you and work around you. I was never told "excuse me sir" or "step back please". If you wanted a close look at something they would just wait till you were done.

Now onto the serious machinery...

If i remember correctly by the livery this is a 2003-2004 Schumi World Championship car.

Image

I think this might be a 2001 Rubens car... hence the #3?

Rare chance to stand over an F1 engine bay... I didn't want to leave...

This service is optional actually. You can store and transport the F1 cars yourself if you want. They just have their techs meet you at the track when you wish to use them. The same is true of the FXX's.

Ok now back to the FXX's. These aren't here for show, they are here to track. All 7 at this event are basically privately owned by cared for by Ferrari from what i was told. They get a few 30 minute sessions to go out on the track through the 3 day weekend event.

Image

Image

Ohh and BTW, all the guys running around in Ferrari gear... Those are all mechanics from Italy, real deal guys from the factory. Not local mechanics (though a few were in the crowd getting trainning). The entire time you could hear these guys all speaking to each other in italian, and they were all very cool but very serious. They rarely actually spoke and just all did their jobs and knew what and where to be at all times.

19 inch racing slick.... YUMMY x2

First FXX out on the day for a few warm up laps during an open Ferrari owner 45min track time.

Track session over, time to put the cars away...

Suddenly as the huge crowd is following the FXX's being pushed back into the paddock a HUGE roar comes from further down. And the sound is one that any motorsport fan knows instantly and everybody suddenly forgets the FXX's exist......

More to come

They're actually firing up all the F1 cars for final checks and warmup before their session.

2005 car, last of the V10's.....

Fire her up!

I knew i should have worn my running shoes!

Image

WOW, just WOW

Image

Image

These are freakin cool, as you can see in the previous pic they're stuck all over the rear suspension components that might be affected by exhuast heat. So with a quick glance you can tell if they're getting too hot.

Image

Image

Once they had the cars started they would sit there and blip the throttle between 3k-5500k for about 2-3 minutes. Then they would slightly raise the blips up to about 7k for another minute or so before shutdown.

Details details details

Up next... F1 Clienti hit the track.....

One of the most interesting parts of watching the F1 cars is that this might be the first track time for some of these new owners. So its like watching a bunch of 16 yr olds out in a parking lot trying to learn how to drive stick. As you'll see in the video, they rev up the engine go to engage the clutch and blah... nothing. The clutches in these cars are sooooo touchy that most of them are scared out of their skin of stalling or spinning the tires.

Hell i would too.

Here the late 70's car passes a stalled 2001 car

Image

"OK! What you must do is push the acceleratore, let your foot off the clutch and keep the wheels pointed straight!"

Image

Now the story behind this picture is just classic. I see and hear the Vintage car come out of the last turn and start down the main front straight. I can hear the 2005 F1 car SCREAMING down the back straight. I'm waiting to get a picture of the 2005 because i'm running out of memory and battery on my camera. But as the vintage car is about to pass me i still see no 2005 car in site at the entrance of the straight. So i quickly pull the camera to my eye so i can get a quick shot of the vintage car. As the vintage car crosses the start finish and enters turn one i suddenly hear the sound of glory. The sound that will make any F1 fan just stop and cry because their life is fullfilled.

The 2005 car has literally covered half of the long front straight before i even hear the engine echo'ing off Nascar turns 3-4 (no they thank god didn't use the banking, the road course exits at turn 4). By the time i pull the camera down from in front of me to see the 2005 car coming its already passing the vintage car into turn one!!! I had never see anything move that quickly in my entire life! It passed the vintage car like it was standing still.

Image

So as i stand there on the pit wall as the F1 V10 screaming probably near 15k RPM everybody roars into cheers and laughter as we've all turned into little school children and dance for joy.... ok well not that far. But looking at the faces of all the F1 fans on that pit was was great, everybody was just estatic. It was simply amazing!

Now the current F1 cars were moving soooo fast that my little point and shoot couldn't get one clear picture, even with me trying to follow the car by

............ Did i forget anything??

Ok ok ok, the damned Video...

Now this was shot with the video function on my Digi cam and recompressed by Google Video. The audio also isn't perfect but gives you a great sense of the true sound.

Sorry for the shakyness at the beginning i guess i was running around one handed and didn't notice it.
