is anything else being done to address this problem? I swear it's much slower than the old forum. I've been coming to this place religiously for almost three years and I don't remember it being this painful before.

I know some people have worked very hard to keep it up and running, so thanks.

I agree.
It's hard to be enthused when surfing the same amt of threads takes twice as long.
I feel for those w/ ADD....
I click reply, go make a sandwich, then come back and have to click back to remember what I was wanting to say...

I'll post up on this.

It seems as though the processor of the server we're runnign on can't do the database queries quick enuff... The header of the page will load... but the content (ie the posts) will take FOREVER... its a little quicker, but still takes a good long time to do.

I know that basically what I just hypothesized the problem to be is that the server is too slow and we need a mega processor, and well... that ain't cheap.... Are there options being explored still? Or at this point are we to suck it up?

It also could be the perl package we're using. Why not downgrade to the previous stable version? There might be a glitch in this version. I would doubt cpu power is the prime factor...

I think the sponsors paid Ron a pile of money to slow down the forum so the users are forced to look at their ads longer...
Ever notice how the ads are the first things to come up and the rest of the screen is blank?

What I've been doing is using the 'Right Click==>Open in New Window' option. I'll open two or three threads then go back to the first one and read it once it has opened. It also helps to use 'Open in New Window' when replying so you can go back to the original thread. Plus, I set the 'posts per page' setting pretty high to minimize the need to wait for it to switch to the next page.

Do these things have an impact on server performance? If so, any guidelines? I'd hate to be part of the problem. I'm just so damn impatient.

Actually, it appears that it is running rather smoothly at this time, with occassional hiccups. If anyone wants to help, reduce the number of posts and topics that you see per page and limit to view the posts that have been active only in last week or so. This can all be accessed through the My Home / Display Preferences. If you don't care about signatures, feel free to turn them off as well.

These improvements are small on the individual basis, but when you multiply it with couple of thousand people, it matters.

Until further notice, the search will be disabled.

Additionally, on Monday, all PMs older then 30 days will be deleted. Please make sure that all the PMs that you need are written down somewhere else.

Both of these steps are only a temporary relief for the server, while we optimize the software components on the server.
