This may interest some of you interested in Diesel technology that Ford already uses in Europe.

Ford Focus Econetic
1.6 TDCi Duratorq engine
115g/km
Fuel efficiency (combined cycle): 65.6mpg UK [54.6 US mpg] 53L capacity
0-60: 10.6 Seconds
119 Mph
177 lb/ft torque @ 1,750 rpm
110 Bhp
Insurance Group: 7

£16, 045 - £17,145 OTR Price UK
$24,059 - $25,708 OTR Price UK

Vs....

Toyota Prius
1.5 VVT-i engine with electrical motor
104g/km
Fuel efficiency (combined cycle): 65.6mpg UK [54.6 US mpg] 45L tank capacity
0-60: 10.9 Seconds
105 Mph
84.7 lb/ft torque @ 4,000 rpm
Insurance Group: 7E

£18,225 - £21,155 OTR Price UK
$27,392 - $31,749 OTR Price UK

So the Focus has:

Better fuel range due to larger tank
Faster top speed
Same combined (City/Highway) economy
Same Insurance group
Over double the torque
Cheaper
Equal safety to Prius (5/5)

Prius has:

Less CO2 Pollution
Electrical technology
Status for people who like to say they're 'green'.

With fuel prices how they are - Ford should surely market this as a cheaper alternative to the Toyota Prius?

What!? The Prius runs on petrol? That's impossible, inconceivable even! There is no way that it does not run on warm, fuzzy thoughts, hugs and kisses, and recycled hummingbird urine.

And that ghastly Focus running on diesel! That's the fuel of Satan.

:bang::bang:

Why do we even bother? We could all rally outside Ford's NA headquarters building with the loudest megaphone ever, and they would still not let go of their delusion that the only vehicle Americans want to buy is an F150.

I hate the Prius. It is just the wrong way to go about the right thing.

In the real world it has nothing on a Corolla.
x982!

I hate the Prius and all the people driving them that are just automatically convinced that they are better than all the other "polluters" on the road.

I see one woman on my way into work every morning, driving he little '07 Prius at like Mach 1 down the highway. Sure, she drives a hybrid.... but I think at that point I'm still getting better milage per tank, lol.

Rule #1.... people are stupid and will believe what they want regardless of the facts.

Yup, and we are still jealous that you guys get it and we don't.

The only thing is the Focus has to be cheaper by the right amount, since diesel is so much higher in cost. Frustrating to see it a dollar more per gallon.
Yeah, a dollar more a gallon but you go almost three times as far on the gallon of diesel so who cares if it costs a little more.

I get mid to high 20's in my SVT average, I don't know how anyone has ever achieved better than low 30's with an SVT. No way it'll average that.

Bring on the Diesel Focus!!!

well we got rid of the commissioner douche that replaced most of the county vehicles with priuses but his protégé probably won't be much better.

It is just the wrong way to go about the right thing.
yep

Wow I'm glad I live in SoCal.

Diesel is only 40 to 50 cents more than regular in my neck of the woods.

The theory behind the Prius is good, but what people actually do with it is wrong. In order to get the most from a car like that, you need to change your driving habits to get the most from the hybrid drive. You're still polluting just as much as everyone else, you're just able to drive farther doing it. I think the Prius is way too complicated and I would never buy one. I've gotten 38mpg on my 05 ZX3 before, good enough for me! It's really all about your driving style.
