Well, I pulled the block out yesterday, man, that was fun, no engine hoist. Somebody wants to buy it.
I hate to say it, but this focus is done. It did last 220k, it's actually a shame because a single valve has ended this car's useful life, I just can't commit myself to putting more money and work into it.
If the ZX3 DOHC engine would have been a near direct swap (headers/intake, maybe a few other odds and ends), I'd have done it in a heart beat. I'm not dropping another SOHC engine in this to have it die in six months or a year.

I guess my biggest mistake was thinking my 17 year old would have destroyed the car before it needed a clutch (spring popped), alternator, shift cables. Granted, these parts aren't prohibitively expensive, however, the clutch had to be done by my mechanic since I don't have an engine hoist, the shift cables require a special tool-again the mechanic had to do them. Alternator is no big deal, but I've gotten well beyond the point of no return.
I'll give you $300 for the car. :p

The problem with that is that he ends up with another SPI that'll more than likely drop a valve seat anyways.

I've seen multiple SPI's dropping valve seats over the last year or so, I don't know why but they do and when it happens it pretty much destroys the engine.

No offense to the SPI guys here but if you go the SPI route I'd find a way to get rid of it as soon as possible.

One local guys dad had an SPI that dropped a valve seat so he had it repaired at a machine shop. That head dropped another seat almost right away.

I sold him a reman SPI which lasted a few months and then smoked the bottom end bearings, it was replaced under warranty by a 2nd reman unit that had issues right off the bat so it got a 3rd reman unit put in.

Not real promising if you ask me.
There is a club I started for those of us that have dropped a valve seat.

nah, if i was going to swap, IMO the only one worth it is to a duratec.
How is an svt swap not worth it?
I'm the one lgSPI was talking about.
I'm going from an auto spi to a 6spd svt.
I'm doing so because my spi crapped out on me.
The swap is coming with every single part I need.
The svt engine is getting rebuilt with JE low comp pistons,
Eagle rods, arp main studs and head studs and also race bearings.
The transmission is coming with torsen limited slip differential,
Clutchmaster stage 3 clutch and aluminum flywheel.
It will be ready for turbo whenever I am ready to do so.

Sounds like you've got it all planned out.

lol thats why i said IMO.

and a direct swap is not worth it, but if ur gonna be building it, then it may be. im just sayin that apples to apples, the strait SPI to SVT swap isnt worth it IMO. i just think if your goin through the trouble, the 2.3 dura is a much better engine.

You enjoy talking down to me don't you Tin? Is this better for you? I know how to type in paragraph format. People complain when I type a post in a paragraph because it is "hard to read" because it all runs together, then you complain when I try to separate the sentences. Can't please everyone I guess. But for you, paragraph posts it is from now on. mmmkay?

I like to talk down to everyone equally.
hahahahahaha........that's awsome. I hope you understood the sarcasm of my last post and didn't think I was actually upset. I would have put a smiley at the end of it, but I can't seem to find them.

Hello I'm new to this, So "Sorry" up front..lol
I just bought a 98 sport 4 dr,, It had a bad rattle.. I got it for $275.00,, I checked the plugs and found out the piston broke apart from the rod and destroyed it.. So my Question is.. I found a short block from a 98 ZX2 2.0 dohc,, Can I simply bolt the head from the sohc on the dohc and will it work? I read where the valve stem may of been the problem,, I'll check the head,, Any help?? Thanks

What do I need I am going from a 2003 auto SPI to a 2003 auto zetec?

I found this. But someone said not all of it is needed if I am swaping a later year than 2002.5?

Zetec Engine/Trans or reuse yours its the same housing pattern
Zetec ECU
Zetec Body Harness
Zetec Engine Harness
Zetec Engine Bay Harness
Zetec Pwr Steering pump and high pressure line from pump to rack
Zetec AC Compressor. The compressor is probably the same between spi and zetec but we swapped it IIRC.
Zetec AC Lines from accumulator -> condensor -> compressor
Zetec Throttle Cable
Zetec Pass. Motor Mount
Zetec Upper Radiator Hose $25.95 @ Tousley
Zetec Lower Radiator Hose $22.34 @ Tousley
Zetec Upper Radiator Tube (tube mounted to radiator support above fans)$15.39 @ Tousley
Zetec Alternator $142.99+$60 @ Tousley

Let me know,
Thanks

and if your swapping the ip5 to an mtx75.....ur also gonna need the shifter cables.......again best bet is to get a donor car
Wow, I did that over 2 years ago. What a nightmare. I had it professionally done. Never ran right. I had called a few on here who did the swap. ALL said they had some sort of issues and they just over looked it. NO ONE ever said anything like that in my research or I would have just done a head job and sold it.

In conclusion, if this happens to anyone and their reading it, do a head job and sell the car. Don't go through what I went through.

I'm sure it's been done, but at this point it's almost certainly cheaper just to buy a zetec-powered car rather than get a "new" drivetrain, mounts, computer, wiring harness, etc.
