Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

News reports say mammoth sport-utility is done

Ford Motor Co. will stop producing the controversial Excursion sport-utility vehicle following the 2004 model year, according to news reports Tuesday.

As the biggest, burliest SUV sold in the United States -- nearly 19 feet long and weighing about 7,200 pounds -- the Excursion was attacked by social critics who accused Ford of environmental irresponsibility. And its elimination, reported first by WDIV-TV (Channel 4) in Detroit, would end Ford's original plans to create a second-generation model that could sell for the remainder of the decade.

Sara Tatchio, a Ford spokeswoman, said the automaker could not speculate on product plans. Tatchio acknowledged the Excursion made some enemies initially, but said the controversy has largely died down.

"It's extremely well-liked by consumers," Tatchio said. "The Excursion remains in our lineup for 2003, and that's all I can add."

Sales have been somewhat disappointing, down 17 percent through June from a year ago, selling 15,107 units through June.

Taller and longer than even GM's Chevy Suburban, the nine-passenger Excursion delivered about 12 m.p.g. and proved too tall to fit in many garages.

Ford released the Excursion in 1999, when sport-utilities were topping each other for size and room, but it quickly proved that bigger wasn't always better. The lumbering Excursion failed to unseat the Suburban as the sales king among full-size SUVs.

The Excursion stumbled from the start, in part because of a wave of negative publicity from environmental groups such as the Sierra Club.

Even before the Excursion was officially introduced, the Sierra Club ran a contest on its Web site to choose a nickname for the vehicle. The winner was the Ford Valdez, after the Exxon tanker that ran aground in Alaska.

Tuesday night, Carl Pope, the executive director of the Sierra Club, hailed the Excursion's pending demise. "I think this is a sign that the age of dinosaurs is about to come to an end," he said.

The Excursion's introduction came less than a year after William Clay Ford Jr., an avowed environmentalist and great-grandson of the company's founder, became chairman in 1998. Ford found himself in the awkward spot of having to justify the vehicle, which the Sierra Club contended would emit 130 tons of carbon dioxide over its lifetime, compared with 23 tons for a car.

An auto analyst who requested anonymity said the decision took him somewhat by surprise. The Excursion, based on the existing Super-Duty F250 pickup platform, cost Ford very little to design and produce, he said.

While sales are down this year, the roughly $41,000 Excursion delivers $10,000 or more in profits for each sale.

The Excursion is built at Ford's Kentucky Truck Assembly plant in Louisville, alongside the Super-Duty F-Series pickup. Eliminating the Excursion would likely have little effect on the plant's 5,700 hourly workers, analysts said.

You'll have to excuse many of my fellow 'jetters, as many of them have an irrational hate of SUVs. They fail to understand that for some people SUVs are very useful vehicles.

Instead of placing blame on the person who made a very poor decision to use one as a commuter vehicle, they blame the SUV. Instead of placing blame on the person who talks on their cell phone while driving, they talk about banning cell phone use in cars. And then they go off and preach all about personal responsibility when someone sues McDonalds for making them fat. Pure Hypocrisy.

PS - I'm not attacking anyone in particular, I'm just complaining about the general attitude as I see it around here. I'm well aware that the jet is made up of 8000 people with their own views and opinions.

Re: Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

Problem is in how the Excursion was marketed. Ford's introduction of the Excursion (as part of the Ex-whaterver line - Escape, Explorer, Expedition, and Excursion) made it seem like suitable option for the general consumer - it encouraged general commuters to buy the Expedition (because they may need to haul something one day and its such a pain to rent the truck at home depot for $16).

Yes its not entirely Ford's fault, but it is them that choose the marketing program and are trying to sell the idea that driving a U-Haul to pick up a Gallon of Milk is a fine idea.

I still like Bill Marr's line "And in case Excursion Owners are concerned that they aren't hurting the environment enough Ford is also throwing in a dead spotted owl as a hood ornament"
Just a joke and paraphrased - admittedly not well

Re: Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

I wonder if we'll see a streched Expedition to fill that market. I remeber when Ford first came out with it they only planned on 25,000 units but the demand was double that the first year.

Re: Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

donzx3 & brian- I have nothing against those who actually used these for a UTILITY vehicle. That's what SUVs of old were always considered and used for, and yes, in towing something or carrying loads of course, they make perfect sense.

But that is no longer what the majority of SUVs are used for.

Apparently despite the economy people don't care about money or price of gas and they go buy one of these beasts just to feel more powerful.

In my experience these days HALF of the vehicles on the road are SUVs. I'd put a good 90% of them only have one person in them and nothing in tow (except for a few shopping bags). And 70% of those are on their cell phone at any given time.

60% demonstrate they believe that because they are driving an 8000-lb vehicle with full leather and wood interior that cost more than a porsche but has worse handling than a hockey puck and sit 10 feet in the air, everyone should get out of their way; and traffic laws, signs, and signals do not apply to them.

100% you can't see around or through to predict traffic stopping ahead. (Funny I just saw a 3-car rear-end pileup in heavy traffic last night. SUV was at the front.)

Sorry for the rant but this is just based on my experience, but I'm sure many of you agree!

IMO SUVs have taken over the muscle car market (for those who want power (of the personal nature), and the minivan market, because people somehow think they are just as safe to haul their kids around in and think they look better because they put a bigger dent in their wallet.

Josh, you're not blaming the SUV, are you? You'd have to have a pretty crappy car to not be able to out-brake an SUV, and even then the only way you're going to rear-end one is if you're following too close or are not paying attention. I know how in heavy traffic you really can't put too much space between you and the car in front or someone else is going to put their car there, but come on - I know you know how to change lanes and get behind a car you feel comfortable following closely.

I have no problem attacking (not literally) people who make extrememly poor commuting choices. But it's not Fords fault, it's not the advertising agencies fault, and it's not the SUVs fault. Quit demonizing them and start placing blame on the people.

Re: Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

Am I missing something here? I came in here thinking that people would be saying how they are disappointed in Ford letting go of the Excursion, and how Ford should continue on. But no instead we have people talking **** about how people should not drive SUVs. Talking about the Denali, Expedition, Navigator, and the Escalade...C'mon on now people...I bet almost 80% of people that are driving down the street and see one of those SUV's on either 20's or 22's or even 24's, you are going to look over and gauk, yet you are still mad that they drive them cause they are not loaded down 24/7 when going down the road. Why come down on someone for simply enjoying a leisurely drive in there SUV. IMO people should stop hating on other people for their vehicle choices....Granted it is a different subject when you have snow to live in for 4-5 months out of the year, but this is crazy that people are actually mad at others for driving an SUV that they don't need. If I drove an SUV my whole life, why should I switch to a smaller car just simply cause I don't need it. Drive what you are comfortable in.

that is just my opinion....I could be wrong

Re: Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

As it sails into the sunset, we hear its theme song one last time:

Can you name the truck with four wheel drive,
Smells like a steak, and seats thirty five?
Canyonero! Canyonero!
Well, it goes real slow with the hammer down
It's the country-fried truck endorsed by a clown
Canyonero! Canyonero!
Hey, hey!
Twelve yards long, two lanes wide,
Sixty five tons of American pride!
Canyonero! Canyonero!
Top of the line in utility sports,
Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts!
Canyonero! Canyonero!
She blinds everybody with her super high beams
She's a squirrel-squashin', deer-smackin' drivin' machine
Canyonero! Canyonero! Canyonero!
Whoa, Canyonero! Whoa!

Re: Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

Living in northern CA i must say there is a far greater percentage of SUVS on the road down south in the cities than up here where a lot of people (not all)actually use them for what they are made for. I could maybe warrant having an SUV because i live up a mile long dirt road which is rather bumpy, but my focus does fine. Most people dont need SUVs and thats a fact.

Re: Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

my property taxes pay for local roads and enforcement of streets. True SUV drivers with lower MPG end up paying more gas taxes but that just covers a part of the costs. The taxes I pay are subsidizing them. I hear a ton of complaints from people when tax dollars subsidize something I happen to support, so its fair for me to complain about SUV's and hope we become less dependent on gluttony.

I also hate driving behind SUV's. yea yea yea you shouldn't tailgate. But if you tag back to far everyone and their mother ends up cutting in front of you, I've never rear ended anyone, i just end up having to break quicker because I can't anticipate stops by seeing the break lights way ahead.

Re: Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

Those of you defending these vehicles should note that several of us "haters" live and commute in very congested areas. I live in a suburb of Dallas, TX and my commute is on occasion very bad. I do resent SUVs cutting of my sight lines. It is true that my focus can outbrake the SUV in front of me, but I spend a lot of time with grills of tall SUVs shoving me from behind. With a braking distance as poor as the average SUV has, they have no business pushing and tailgating in traffic. I believe that the average SUV driver has no idea how truly poorly they handle, how slowly they stop and how much inertia 3 tons of detroit steal carry. Add these features to the mistaken notion that a driver is safer in an SUV and what do you get?

You get 120 pound houswives with two forty pound kids driving 80 miles an hour talking on the cell phone, while tailgating some poor unfortunate who chooses to drive a reasonable car.

Re: Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

Reasonable to who? Are you setting the standards?

I posted it elsewhere, but it bears repeating:

quote:
Do I think it's stupid? Yeah.

Do I tell people what to drive? Nope. I guess that's your job.
Image

Chicago traffic is pretty bad, too. It can take me over an hour to get to work. And you know what? It still doesn't matter to me what you're driving, any more than I care what kind of music you're listening to.

Personally, I think it's reasonable to expect every commuter to drive an Insight. Maybe a Prius, if you have a family. Does that mean that if you choose to drive a BMW, you're an idiot, or socially irresponsible, or anything else? If a 10mpg Excursion is irresponsible, how about a 10mpg Ferrari? At least the Excursion can seat eight people, while towing your boat. All the Ferrari is good for is extralegal speeds.

What's stupid? Ten miles per gallon? 15? 25? I'm glad you're here to make that call for everyone.

In short, I'd no more buy an Excursion than you would. The difference is, I don't presume to make judgements about those that do.

Re: Ford looks to kill Excursion in 04\'

I don't make the standards, but I would like to see them applied to everyone. These vehicles should have the CAFE standards applied to them. I don't really care if you drive a boat or not, but I do take exception with people driving Sherman Tanks that are guaranteed to ride over my bumpers and kill me in an accident.
