One of my best friends has been talking about these ugly arse things for yrs. He finally bought one.

They actually have dealers. He purchased a 71 at a small dealer in San Luis Obispo.

Its got a flat 4, and seems to be pretty reliable and tough. BUT DAMN, its ugly. He paid 10,000 for it... IMHO seems really expensive. I could see 5k, but 10????

This document says that they have a 5-cylinder turbo diesel...

What does he plan on doing with it, exactly? Are they road legal?

Its somthing like 17inches of clearance. He keeps telling me how much better it is than any other SUV, then I ask him if he is going to drive it Vegas when he comes to visit. He replys no, its not comfy enogh or fast enough. WTF? Doesnt sound as good as he says..LOL

I would daily-drive that just to see the look on H2 owners' faces. :p

Edit: With a "mine's bigger" sticker on it.

Its not bigger. Its smaller than the old VW hippiebus. Just looks big in that pic above. There are a bunch of those running around here in the backwoods of Wisconsin. Its popular with the rock crawling off road people.
Ive seen some on the highway doing about 40 to 45 mph, so Im guessing that is wide open. They will go anywhere off the road. I saw one on a trail in southwest wisconsin pulling a CJ jeep through about 2 feet of muck mud.

There is a small dealer here in Denver that sells the Unimogs and other military style 4x4 vehicles. You actually see them driving around here on a semi-frequent basis. I think they are awesome, but they do look really out of place on a modern roadway.

I can't imagine what it would be like trying to get parts for that thing. Maintenance could be a nightmare on something like that.

Yeah, there's a few guys here in SE Wisconsin that have what I believe to be Puch Pinzgauers. They are also crazy off-road beasts.

Forget that thing. I want a Unimog!
UniMogs are sweet! If it ever comes down to owning a monster it will be the H1 or a mog...

Honestly I was as impressed as hell. It has as much articlulation as my X but that's where its limitations end. The "Pinz" as its owner affectionately calls it, has ground clearance it would take me 40" tires to achieve and he has 32"s. It's locked which we all know the the benefits of except it can shift into low at speeds up to 30 mph. The portal axles look heavy enough for a monster truck. It looks tippy as hell but it got side slope on a hill I did not get a picture of at near 40 degrees and it did not show signs of tipping. Supposedly it tips at over the mid 40 degrees range.

It's built for one thing...getting 10 troops into battle no matter the terrain.

Negatives are it's top speed is 60 mph, 0-60 in 15 minutes, and it sounds like a lawn mower.
And I'll guarantee that it can't go everywhere I can in my Explorer. . .but I can't comfortably haul 10 guys around in the back.

Can't go everywhere MY explorer can. ;)
Alright, you win. A service bay at a ford dealer, and every picture on your website! Ive never seen an X flex like that. Almost had to look at the suspension closeup to see if you just welded explorer body panels to a cherokee subframe!

All you need is your X towing a pinzgauer off a rock pile, and your photo album will be complete.

I've always thought these Dakar Rally team support trucks were co0l:

There've been Tatras, Renaults, MANs, etc; this one's a DAF. It's powered by a 12.6 litre 6 cyl direct-injected turbodiesel with 800 HP and 3100 Nm torque.

They boogie through incredibly deep sand; check the ground clearance.

My stepbrother is into obscure offroad vehicles too. He wanted a Pinz, but just bought a new Quigley conversion 4 wheel drive Ford van.

He he, I got to drive a 8 wheel drive all wheel steer MAN tractor for the old GLICBM, those were fun, but quite a unwhieldy beast. Although the adjustable crane on the back could lift 3000lbs easily. I see a few of them running around here before they head out for some real off roading...

I still want an old deuce-and-a-half
but I do love the mog's
that pinzgaur is pretty cool too though. I like it, Its smaller wheelbase than the mog(that has been the biggest downfall of the mog that ive seen) Id take a turbo diesel version with a high mounted intake

I love the Pinz too. Pretty cool, especially the portal axles. Brilliant engineering. I saw them up close and personal in Austria. Much smaller than you think they are.

We have some 6x6 US Army trucks at work. They're engineering vehicles, granes on the back and a big flatbed. They're pretty cool too. They have big circular holes in the roof too, I guess for a gun turret. Pretty cool trucks.

My personal favorite, and one that I might get soon is a LR Discovery. I love the heritage of them. Might be a good "diversion" for me for a decade or so, now that I started a family, and riding dirt bikes mean leaving the family behind.

Where are Puch's made? Austria? I was looking at these on eBay a few weeks ago, they are sweet, I was never aware that these and the Mercedes Unimogs had that portal type axle. Didn't know such a thing existed.
