It was the lowest priced vehicle by about $14,000, except for the tacoma.
What do you expect?

It was far out classed pure and simple.
If they had dumped another $15,000 into the focus, I'm sure it would have been much more competitive.

what do you expect when you take a slow car, add mediocre suspension, do relatively mild engine work and put it up against such competition?
whats so diff about civic Si?
Why don't you read the article and find out

I gave them an idea to get up to 130. In the 2003 event we had clutch problems, so we blew through the cones and used the extra space to get up to 130 and took the 5 second cone. They tried that too with Larry Webster driving. He made about a lap and a half around the speed way on the oval and got up to 127. So the car was close to doing 130.

The Powerworks kit is a very nice package. It just needs a tuner shop to build one. Tony D, at New Edge, has sold a bunch of those kits. He is kinda the guru on them. I think if he builds a car, you will see some Focus glory. I keep trying to talk him into it.

Yeah but still, with that amount of money and resources I woulda been in there with something more then a stock focus, a powerworks kit, and a big ol sticker.

It isnt about getting to 130MPH. It's to show the world that you're who you are, meaning that it was their chance to show that they are among some of the best tuners out there.

did you read the article?

the REASON they got last place is because the car did not achieve 130mph.

#18 ·
Exactly. They just told the world that they cant achieve the 130MPH mark. Are people going to say 'Damn that company must be pretty badass to come in dead last with a DNF, while all the other companies were able to do it with ease!'? NO! They're gonna be like 'LMAO! That POS cant even hit 130MPH! ROLF!'.

Honestly I woulda ask C&D and photoshop my shop logo and keep me annonymous if I failed that badly.

Unfortunately, it seems Powerworks chose to show what their kit could do in essentially stock form on a ZX3. You could build the car they sent for a lot less than the $25k they advertised it at in the article. The unfortunate thing, which has Foci afficionados so disappointed, is that Powerworks undersold the potential of both the platform and the product. Better not to have entered it at all if they were going to do it halfway! Now, if there had been a third category for CARB legal cars representing an "average" real-world consumer of the developer's product, the Powerworks car would have romped all over most, if not all, of the competition. Overall, I'm disappointed, and give PW a

for bringing a halfhearted (relative to the task/competition) effort - at the least they could have brought a prototype SVT kit w/ a suitable tranny so that they would not have DNF'd...

Might not be that bad a show for the Focus considering the price compared to the other contestants, but one thing agreed was that it might have been the best street car of the bunch. To put a CARB legal car up against a 450 hp monster is not really a fair comparison. And also the 15.2@92 mph might been a bit misleading considering a fellow jetter just showed us 13.95@104mph!!

did you look at what the other companies spent?

neon srt-4: $43,153
mini cooper: $50,756
civic si: $39,184
other civic si: $53,199

... did anybody tell the powerworks guys they could drop another $20k on the car and maybe get a bit more performance out of it?

or were they _trying_ to keep it on the cheap, hoping to blow away the more expensive ricers?

i do believe that was the man's point.

^^Exactly. The Focus had the 1st place SRT-4 beat handily in braking distance, and it wouldn't have taken much more in terms of tuning - IMHO - to make up the difference of 1.5 seconds in the 1/4 and 1 second on the track. I don't think it would have even taken another 20k either - I'm guessing a FR head w/ FI cams and tuning would probably have done the trick. Heck, there's probably a Jetter out there that Powerworks could have called and used their car...

edit: Just for clarification, I imagine that Powerworks was hoping their stock kit would be enough to win the price/performance war - and I think it is. However, this contest was never about price/performance ratio at all - only about performance, price being no object to anyone but Powerworks and the guy that brought the Tacoma and had to limp it home. Hopefully this isn't taken as criticism of PW's product though, as soon as I can pony up the cash I'll be contributing to PW's warchest for the next go-round

Some of their prices are strange. They paid twice as much to get their gauges installed as they did to get SVT brakes installed on the car.
Image
Also, they went with the price of a new vehicle, rather than the price of a used 2001 ZX3 (although I guess they have to do that to stay consistent throughout the field).

Anyhow, I don't think it does much to diminish the achievements that Powerworks have contributed to the Focus community. Most of us are aware that the kit is capable of more power and faster times, and are also aware that the chassis is capable of better things as well. It'll just have to lead to some unsuspecting import owners, I guess.

Powerworks didn't know it was an all out challenge, the rules were vague so they played it safe and got screwed. No need to go on and on and harp over it. If they have it again next year maybe it will be a different story if they show up again.

P.S....jr-psych...the braking distances were from 120 mph not 130 like all the other entrants so naturally they will be shorter.
