The SVTF cluster is an Electro-Luminescent (EL) cluster. Changing any of the bulbs in the back will do nothing to change the color of the face, only the needles.

just change the whole entire tach ... there are a couple of nice ones in ebay that go for like 70$ .. that have a like blue light in them for the night time and white for day light ..

 

Do it yourself...

The 'indiglo' lights up white...

The overlay is painted green on the backside.
It's layered over the silver and the digits, so removing it would remove everything.

Scan the overlay, Photoshop the silver out of it, print it on quality white paper and you have your new overlay...and it'll be WHITE.
I did this, and added a blue film underneath and made this...
(Also white and a transparency over the white)

And in the daylight...

(If you look closely, I also Photoshopped out the MPH, enlarged the SVT logo, and thickened the redline)

i thought the SVT cluster's clear cover wasnt able to be removed from the backside. did you cut it off to gain access to the overlay?

mine will stay green though. everything else is.

 

The overlay and EL panel are separate...there is no clear cover, just a overlay with silver on the outside and green on the inside.

 

im speaking of the clear plastic shield that prevents you from touching the gauges.

 

Oh ****...just plastic barbs all the way around...easily removable.

 

Ok so if you copy the clusters in clear then put a white peice then your color film you get rid of the green?

 

I don't use clear anymore...I printed the image straight to paper, add the colour film underneath and your done...
Do whatever you want with Photoshop...I removed the MPH and tweaked the logo redline size.

I didn't like 'reading' the blue face...white looks much nicer, and is way easier on the eyes.

Only if I had a spare cluster to practice on I might do that, otherwise I would #$%^ something up.

I agree that blue illumination is hard on the eyes if its not the right shade. Ever wonder why you dont see too many light-up blue store signs.

 

Never thought about using photo paper...it probably doesn't have the transparency to pass the light thru light regular paper...
I just use heavy weight inkjet/laserjet paper...

Don't use these images...they are compressed, resized, etc...
If you do your own, scan at high res, and work with it as a tiff format, uncompressed, to preserve image quality. And you WILL notice the quality of the print if you compress it (jpeg).
My original, modified image is about 24 MB!

 

That's cool man. I'm gonna have to try that. Were can a person perches the color film for the back lay behind the gauges?

 

Haha...good question. I used soft-cover binder I found at Office Depot that had a transparent blue cover! It was a tad thick, but worked...
That was the best solution I could find at the time...

Hey wungun. I got the pieces separated and am going to attempt this. But what did you do to the odometer to have it light blue like that? And you just printed the overlay to white paper and cut out the blue for underneath?

I replaced the bulb with a pair of blue LED's soldered to the socket...

Would it be possible to place an aftermarket temperature gauge in the stock location, then change the overly so that it shows useful information? Or is the stock gauge a weird shape?

 

You wont be able to replace it...once you see how the dash is put together, you'll see what I mean...

 

i notced that after taking the silver stuff off that the lense still had the numbers and stuff on it, but the mph numbers were gone. im confused as to how that happened? i see you edited them out of the photoshopped version but how are they gone from the lense? also if i wanted the guages to light up white then could i just take silver stuff off and just stick a blank white piece of paper back there? or do i have to print the cluster onto it first?

 

You have to print it cause the 'lens' with the numbers on it has green film all over the back, right...?

i havent done the mod yet but i do plan to thats why i was asking. i want to better understand the whole process before thearing into it. how can i get the silver stuff off? once its off will the nmbers still be on the lense like yours? if so then can I just put a solid piece of paper back there with nothing printed on it and the light just shine white?

 

The colours on the gauge face are basically painted on from the back side...looking at the back, you see green, then silver under that then the numbers...So if you go sanding, your gonna end up with uneven are broken thru colour issues...
I tired this with mine first as well...it's ruined.
