Ive done fiberglass before but I wanted to check with anyone who knows if the FG or CF will stick to a painted surface as in trying to form a shape from a body part?

for example ( and i mean example dont flame me ) if you cut cloth to just go beyond the sides of the hood and were going to glass it or do the Carbon fiber style would the resins stick to the paint? Is there a way to coat parts with an oil to prevent sticking etc...?

just wanted to learn more techniques on how to shape things that arent flat

tin foil bro........cover the whole thing in tin foil before you lay your FG/CF, then afterwards just pop it free and the foil will mostly peel off the glass exept for a few stubborn spots. i did it in my trunk to make a custom sub enclosure and it didnt ruin the carpet peices that i used to form it
don't double post please
wrap the area in a large trash bag or two. glass over the plastic.

Sorry for the double post, wasnt sure which one to use and who used which thread.

So does the plastic peal off like a foil ??
yeah, plastic will come off easier than foil. Wrap a couple layers of thick plastic over the area, tape it down so its tight, and if u need to form it more, put foil over the plastic to hold it into crevices.
cool these are some good Ideas Ill try after I finish the swingarm on my bike.

Hey I havent found the CF around me in houston, is it costly or runs like the FG? also where can I find it?
it's more expensive. try www.selectproducts.com

edit: and if you're laying fg or whatever on a smooth painted surface, it wont stick. to be sure you can coat the surface in release agent (pam cooking spray, oil, etc).
I use saran wrap successfully, sticks nice to the surface, but comes off nice and easy.

you might be looking at the prelaid sheet. that's already set up. look for the 50oz mat. it's $55 or so.

Im gonna try saran wrap, then foil, then saran on top again, can afford any getting through on the bumper Im usuing as a mold, plus it has some extra contours to it.

So you havent had it eat through saran wrap

it was killing the surgical gloves I wore, or at least the finger tips

Resin has very high-power solvents in it. They're the actual liquid of the resin, and when the solvent evaporates it leaves behind the hard, plasticy surface. Chemicals like paint and latex (in your gloves) are similar to the polymers dissolved in the resin, and so the solvents will try to dissolve them too. Saran wrap is made of tougher stuff, so the liquid parts of the resin will dry up before they can eat through it.

also, resin cures with heat... enough heat can melt and distort latex gloves.

also cause the bottom of a bucket to warp and smoke up tons of toxic fumes, at that point cover face and walk away.
