Yesterday, I had the job of changing a co-worker's son's springs on a 99 Escort ZX2. I was asked to do this since apparently he heated his stock springs to lower it originally. This caused quite a bit of rubbing between the tire and fenders, popping the tires quickly. Now, I guess he had driven like this for about 2500 miles or so, and because of the weakened state of the springs, had deformed them pretty badly. Here is the difference between some Megan Racing springs (which has a 2" drop) and the stock heated springs. The first pic is of the front, which looks pretty bad, but the back has the REAL damage...

Notice the 45 degree angle on the rear spring. This should be a lesson to all on what NOT to do.

That second spring is MEANT to be like that... It helps increase or decrease camber by about 45* pos or neg depending on which way you install it. Just a little fyi.

(This design works with USCA's- Ultra Short Control Arms. The idea is that if your control arm is only 3" long, the wheel travels in a more pronounced arc, so you need bent springs. It's a hell of a mod, but the performance gains are unimagineable!!

Yeah, I guess he only needed the 45 degree camber on one side of the rear. Further talks with this guy revealed that he thought the tires were rubbing because he put 17s on his car. Apparently he put the rims on the same time he torched the springs. I made him take them home and show all of his friends so they don't do any more like that.

You should have cut his brake lines while you were under the car. The gene pool would thank you.
