Got a CEL..how do I find out what its for?

I got a scanner from Autozone that seems to work fine in getting codes and clearing them. Curious thing though-I got a CEL on my SVT a few weeks ago and used my Predator to check and then clear it. The Predator read the codes, then cleared them, but the light didn't go away. Used my $149 Actron scanner and cleared them right away and the light went out. Got a couple of new codes the other day so I plugged my Predator in and even though the CEL light was on, the Predator did not read any codes?? Plugged in the other scanner and it read them right away. I'm not sure if it's operator error or not with the Predator reading codes?
