I read a recommendation on another forum for Green Diamond winter tires. They're made by a joint venture between a minor American tire company and an unnamed Scandinavian manufacturer. They take used tires and give them a high-quality retread with aggressive winter tread designs, and scraps of diamond carbide molded into the rubber. It's supposed to be like carrying your own supply of sand or ash when driving on ice. But it won't damage asphalt, so it's legal for use in states where studded tires aren't.

Has anyone put these to use on their Focus? They aren't terribly expensive, but I'm a little apprehensive about being the guinea pig.

I have a friend who had them on his Contour and said they compared nicely to the Haakapelliittas that he had prior.

Well, your fancy big-city drivin' doesn't involve gravel roads.
