heat shields and the Cat

Ok Question here...when your heat shields loosened up and started to rattle...what did the dealer do? I lost my lower heat shield and they replaced it, but I'm not sure if did anything for the upper one since it was still rattling a couple weeks after I got the car back. I brought it again last week and they told me that they needed to replace the Cat on the car
, but never mentioned why...I think that its a little extreme to replace the whole thing to fix the upper heat shield.

Most dealers will just throw a wrap tie or two around the shield to stop the rattle. Dont have them bother to replace the whole cat, unless its not in good condition...
My bottom heat shield came off and I left it that way. If it's not there it can't rattle! I don't think I'll be driving through tall, dry grass (or something else that's inflamable) anytime soon so what's the point of keeping it?
Intresting...mine came loose and I took it in. The service writer said thay'd have to replace the whole cat. I had to come back when the part came in and when I checked the invoice it was the part number for just the shield. Check this:they put the cause as "found broken cat by hitting curb R&R cat shield not covered by warranty". Now they didn't charge me a dime, but I gotta wonder: why would they put that in the writeup? And how are you gonna damage that by hitting a curb?
The only problems I've had with the cat heat shields was the damned things getting caught on cross members and other heat shields when I was pulling the stupid thing off.

Yeah, that's legal.
