Why do you need to take out the whole thing? I would just take off the intake manifold or pull the head with the manifold on it. You would get adequate access to the alt. there.
You actually can get the alternator off w/o removing the engine or any part of it... it's just a pain in the @$$. Get the Haynes manual. They have directions.
taking the alternator out is not too hard, it is kinda tight, but easily doable. If you want to take out the engine, you will need to raise your car, if i remember correctly, 36 inches and remove it from the bottom. now that is a PITA!!! but, yet again, very doable.
