Its damned confusing.....400S or 2005? The owners manual that came with my 01'ZX3 was actually for a 00'. The 00' manual called for the 2005 in the DOHC but when I downloaded the 01' manual from Ford it calls for the 400S in both engines, what gives. A very good while back someone posted that the downloaded version was a misprint but guess what, its still there on the Ford site, think they might have changed it by now. Now absolutley zero high quality filter manufacturers make a 2005 filter however most of the big guys make a 400S filter, if the 2005 is for the Zetec and the 400S is for the SPI isn't that back asswards? I've been using the Pure1 PL20195 for 39K and am very happy with it, but will using that filter damage my engine in time?

Ok owner connection finaly changed it. So what filter cross references to the 2005? I looked at several Motorcraft filters and they were filthy (still new in box). Will using the 400S cause failure or what? I want to use the right product but damn, what choices are there?

Motorcraft FL-2005 is a QUALITY filter and dirt cheap too

.($3.50 or something like that at Walmart).
I was waiting for the arrival of the super-duper AC Delco Ultraguard Gold filter (that line used to be sold for $10 at Pepboys). It looks like the manufacturer, Champ Labs, is wrapping up that fancy brand - it wasn't profitable enough. So we really don't have a choice now.

Looks like I may switch to the 2005. Dunno, like I stated above the ones I looked at were filthy (Large amount of paper debri and other "stuff" throughout the new filter). I'm getting some damned clean oil out of the Pure1, hate to quite using it. Thanks for all of your input and links.

The difference between the spi and zetec filter is the check valve in the 2005. This insures that there is already oil in the 2005 upon cold start. Continual use of the 400 could lead to problems.

yes, this confusion is also on the zx2.com board about using the k&n oil filters. that filter is for the SOHC & only has one check valve. the DOHC requires two. same thing with the Mobil 1 oil filter. too bad too cuz i did a lot of research & the k&n is a good filter. also the Mobil 1 filter is one of the best on the market but no application for the zetec. grrrr!
