interference engines?

I'm looking at a 2005 Focus. Is the Duratech 20 an interference engine? If the timing belt breaks will the valves hit the pistons? Any other known issues with this engine?

Are special tools required for replacing the timing belt?

it uses a chain and yes its interference.

Thanks for that reply. I'm glad to see that engine has a chain. But are there any issues with the cam timing, for example, tensioner collapsing and making the engine jump time? The reason I ask, if I buy the car,I will put at least 150 to 175 K miles on it within 3 - 4 years. I'm just wondering about it's longevity. My current 2001 LX has 153 K on it with relatively little trouble.
The only way you'd have any trouble with the cam timing is if you were in there fooling with it, OR if you were putting on one of the under-drive pulleys. They are well known to have that risk durring installation. Otherwise, that's the advantage of having a timing chain: it's more secure than a belt.
I did buy the car, seems to be pretty nice, however I did notice that the trans fluid was a little low. After adding 1.5 quarts I looked under the car and it does seem that the transmission has been leaking a little. Possibly from somewhere around the top of the transmission?? At least it's still under warranty. I'll try to look a little closer tomorrow - maybe I can fix it myself - I kind of have a trust issue with the Ford dealer in town.

on an 05 (or any car under warranty), don't even mess with it. find a dealer you DO trust and have them do he work. if you mess with it, that just gives them grounds to not do the work under warranty.

The only way I'll fix it myself is if it's something extremely simple, like a loose dipstick tube or something. I am a certified master mechanic with ASE, but not trained on Ford tranmissions and not eager to learn. It kinda pisses me off I didn't check it out a little better. At least it's still well within warranty.
