Is the Mazda 3\'s tranny a MTX-75 variation?

Just wondering if the Mazda 3's tranny will bolt to the Focus' block? Since we both use Duratec 2.3's it would seem logical, but who knows. If so are our axles the same?

Reason I ask is the gearing in the Mazda 3 is much better, possibly even better gearing then the 4.06's or the 3.82's in terms of spacing. Here's a breakdown of what I have found (all calculations based on 205/50/15's since most of us use those to race and 6500 redline):

Mazda 3 gearing:

1st: 3.307 (33mph)
2nd: 1.842 (59mph)
3rd: 1.31 (83mph)
4th: 0.97 (112mph)
5th: 0.755 (144mph)

Final: 4.105

Now for the 4.06's:

1st: 3.42 (32mph)
2nd: 2.14 (51mph)
3rd: 1.43 (77mph)
4th: 1.03 (107mph)
5th: 0.77 (143mph)

Final: 4.06

Now for the 3.82's:

1st: 3.42 (34mph)
2nd: 2.14 (55mph)
3rd: 1.43 (82mph)
4th: 1.03 (113mph)
5th: 0.77 (152mph)

Final: 3.82

Now for the 3.42's:

1st: 3.42 (38mph)
2nd: 2.14 (61mph)
3rd: 1.43 (91mph)
4th: 1.03 (127mph)
5th: 0.77 (169mph)

Final: 3.42

As you can tell the 3.82's are fairly close, though I feel that 2nd gear is slightly too short. Anyway, I felt I would bring this up to see if anyone has any comments about it. Like I said above I don't even know if the tranny will bolt up, if it would it could possibly be a cheaper option the busting open the tranny to put in a different final drive, though putting in a LSD at the same time would be more then worth it.

I have a 3 and will help if I can. Any noticeable markings to look for. Let me know and I'll check it out. It would be cool if they where but I think they are different.

Maybe you could snap a few pictures under there?

I'll see what I can do tomorrow.
I'm going to pull the intake just for the hell of it too. I'll get pics of that too and post to see the differences and likes.

thats wrong.... i have a MTX-75 with stock gears and i can do 125 or so bouncing off rev limiter at 7k in 4th gear? where did you get 113?
No, it is right for the parameters I used. For one I used 205/50/15 tires, and I only had redline set at 6500rpm. Remember you're in a Duratec Forum also, we don't have as high of redlines. Also, you can't go off of your guage since it isn't calibrated for those speeds. So all of those factors create error.

If I were to switch to 205/50/16's with a 7K redline you would be able to run 127mph with the 3.82's actually.

Back on topic though. First things first we need to compare bolt patterns and axel splines. If those match up then we should be well on our way.

I was under the impression 3's used something like a 3.26 final drive?

the mazda3 uses a differnent transaxle, nothing is shared with the Ford MTX75.

Ok, but will it bolt up? Bolt pattern, shift linkage, starter, clutch lines, and axle splines?

Same motor....I cant imagine it wouldn't. But why? You can get better gears for the focus as it sits.

Because we don't have a drop in solution for this gearing. To get better gearing we would need to crack the tranny open. If we could just bolt one up with better ratio's all the better. Now for me, I'd probably go the other route and have a new final drive put in along with a LSD at the same time. But just trying to find other options that are available. Though the spacing on the MZ3's tranny is almost ideal in my book.

You want to keep your MTX-75. The Mazda transaxle is not as strong, and harder to change ratios in ultimately. Why else would I have gotten a call from Tri-Point Engineering about utting the MTX-75 from the Focus in their Mazda 3 for Speed Touring Car?

Good info, but the whole point is not to change ratios (as far as going internal). I doubt that most people would put enough power down to kill the tranny. Though I have to admit the MTX-75 is by far the best MTX I've driven.

you should have really read my thread on the Mondeo Transmission.

Yeah, I've read that before and it kind of works out like putting 4.06's into our current setup. I just don't like the spacing from 2nd-3rd or 3rd-4th. Mainly 3rd-4th for track purposes.

Just tossing ideas around though.
