Is there a market for a sports car in the US?

I was think about what should do to follow up the GT.

not a super car, but a Simple, lightweight, mid-engine, < 200hp car.

I am thinking ford should follow up the GT with a back to basics Sports car. <2400lbs powered by a transverse mounted Duratec 23, 6spd manual.

Think [email protected] +155lb/ft torque @ 5000rpm in 2400lb RWD mid-engine 2 seater.

Standard
getrag 6spd manual
power steering
power locks
power windows (lighter than roll ups.)
4 speaker CD player
Recaro cloth buket seats

only option,
clutchless Getrag 6 spd transaxle. $1500

Sell <50,000 per year worldwide.

The car would Share major components with the C1. wheels, engine, Transaxle, brakes, power steering , etc.

Does the Car need more than 170hp?

How much?

Should it be retro (GT), or modern (visos)?

Which mix would be better, 220hp+ leather $30k or 170hp $20k?

BTW this Will not Be an MR2 Spyder, think torque, more mass, Ford handling.

correct me if I'm wrong, but we're looking at what is basically a ford version of the Elise (i'm thinking the hopped up version (not the exige) that they sold in limited numbers a couple years ago) sold at the same prices Brits pay for the Elise...

HELL YES it'll sell. I don't see how it couldn't. THe guys who turn thier miatas into trackday warriors would basically start out with one of these isntead.
Yes.
I'd pimp it, if you gave me a cd player delete, and a good aftermarket. Sell it for 25k and kill everything in that pricerange.

$20k with 170HP... Then some aftermarket.

And enough room for someone that's 6'6" (me).
The idea would be to have shared aftermerket with the other C1 cars, I.E. brake upgrades would be applicable to all C1 models.

I was thinking would it be cheaper to use a Front engine, RWD layout, but that would require all new parts, and offer fewer cheap parts.

My next car (second/real project car) when I can manage it will probably be a second generation MR2, more or less what you're talking about but with Toyota slapped on it.
If I find a deal on a Turbo'd one when time comes, great, if not, I've already got my turbo kit picked out for the 5SFE.
$5k for a NA model in decent shape, then $5k-$10k in aftermarket and/or replacement parts and I'm set... Ultimately it might end up closer to the $20k mark than I'd like, but we'll see.

Of course if Ford came out with something like you're suggesting, I'd seriously consider it and another 4 or 5 years with Ford Credit (9 or 10 months to go on the Focus).

Maybe hints of GT styling and call it the "Focus 40"?

Sounds like a Pontiac Solstice. GM will beat Ford to market on this one. But that's probably OK, the market is relatively small for these kinds of cars. If the Elise, MRS, and Solstice are all for sale there will be absolutely no room for Ford to make any money.

Think about these types of cars past performance. The MR2 is the only one that stuck around for any lenght of time (maybe the Miata to). The market for a super small sports car, unfortunately, isn't there.

Besides, Ford can't even make a decent sedan. Why should they dump already limited resources into a project that won't make any money? Which really brings into view the questionable decision making behind products like the Thunderbird and upcoming GT40.
Sounds pretty much like a Miata, with a different drivetrain.
Simple, lightweight, RWD 250bhp(Turbo'd/IC'd)

Roughly the same size as a Miata, just a shade heavier, two seater roadster.

Standard:
6 spd trans
Power brakes
Power steering
Racing bucket seats
racing harness
Scooters(2)

Options:
None from dealer

The car would share most major compenents from existing street models

Would the car need more than 250hp?

How much?

Should it be Retro? It is.

What would be better?

And the manufacturer says it can be built and sold for around $15k!

What is it? The Dodge Razor Concept.
This car would be a street killer, it uses most off the shelf parts out of Dodge's parts bin. The engine is a tweaked and intercooled version of the same engine in the SRT4.

Man I wish they would make this car!!!

I like the whole setup except for the getrag. So far I'm not seeing the virtues of this tranny over the mtx75. And I sincerely doubt Ford will every really put their game face on in making a true limited frills sports car.

I'm thinking the next Ford Focus GT will be decent. Probably 170+ hp with 150+ ft/lbs. But it won't be super light.
I just don't think it can happen with the Ford we have now. There would have to be some major changes in the way they operate and think. I agree with EastAl the Razor is the purest form of what I want the most in a new car right now. The Elise is coming but at an exorbitant price tag that I will never be able to reach. The possibility is there to make a true sports car for the common person but it would take more risk than anyone is willing to give. The closest we have right now is the Miata but it keeps getting heavier and more upscale every iteration it seems. We'll see what happens with the Mazdaspeed Miata and related progeny on that front. Personnally right now I plan on trying to buy an SRT-4 at the end of 2004 instead of a Miata for a couple reasons 1) Power 2) No miata coupe 3) size 6'4" tall. And the miata costs more how? why? Cause they're trying to move it more and more upscale.

SOMEONE needs to make a car razor style, keep it simple (like the first gen miata) and throw out the padding, throw out the leather, throw out the noise insulation, throw out the balance shafts, throw out door panels, throw out the carpet, throw out the stereo. No stupid interior accents, no smooth curvy plastic [censored]. Give us spot riveted round aircraft guages in a row. Track test the mfucker until its pushing max g's possible and to hell with cushy ride and tire wear. Then find a way to warranty all your factory race cars for 3 years

The Reason is that getrag makes the 6 spd used on the Duratecs in europe, also Getrag makes the MTX75 in a 50/50 joint venture with ford. the Getrag design is sound, it isn't perfect in the FSVT.

Also They use a high Torque Getrag in the 2.0l TDCi. It works ok, And is mass produced(affordable)

The use of a 5 or 6 spd irrelevent it all comes down to price. Also the Clutchless system May not be applied to the MTX75, but will be used with the 6 spd.

An AMT would be cheaper han fitting a CVT. Assuming it's carried over from another product.

If cost becomes too much of an issue Build it in china.
