JRSC-BBK Questions -

575 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  snobrdrdans_sedan
I am going to get the BBK in a few months. I have just a few questions about it.

1) How good is the fuel solution? I mean, I read a few months back that, on the regular JRSC it sucked (terrible mileage). Does the re-programed chip on the BBK suck too?

2) The BBK comes with new injectors, right? What about a larger throttle body?

3) I read on Jackson Racing's website that the you can't use a performance chip with the re-programmed stock chip, does the re-programmed stock chip increase top speed, increase redline or anything the like?

4) How many bolt on mods can the re-programmed stock chip handle? I mean, I read that you could get MILs or drivability issuse if you do too many modifications with the re-programmed chip.

Thanks for the help -

nevermind
Uhhhh YES, the reflash does remove the speed limiter...I have the BBK, along with a FS cool-flo and have no problems. You CAN run an aftermarket intake...but the SVT air box works VERY well. I just got the Cool-Flo to get alot of whine
I kept the SVT snorkel and pushed it up into the Cool-Flo box. I am also running a FS race header, and flex pipe and a really old OBX flex back exhaust. Im not sure what my numbers are...but it feels alot more powerful. Im thinking High 170's horsepower. I am only getting about 21 mpg...but thats cause I cant keep my foot off of the gas...Its just so fun. (I've only had it for about 2 weeks.) The BBK comes with 30 lb injectors, an SVT airbox, larger calibrated MAF, reflash and a 2.5" pulley with new belt. Just go to www.jacksonracing.com and read the instructions...it tells you what will and will not cause MIL's and drivability issues. You can add air intakes, shorty headers (that retain the CAT), exhaust, throttle body, things of that nature without MIL's or drivability issues. Race headers will give a MIL but no drivability issues, and Cams may cause MIL's and drivability issues. That should help you out some.

The stock JRSC kit uses the dreaded "black box" which basically just tricks the car into dumping more gas into the car at WOT. It activates when it detects boost and tells the car to add extra fuel. It's really simple "tuning" that causes a rich condition. The BBK uses a reflashed stock ECU that actually adjusts timing and fuel for the JRSC. The BBK has much closer-to-stock gas mileage and drivability.

As long as you can keep from driving around at full throttle you should get near-stock mileage... good luck with that.

New injectors yes: 30lbs

New throttle body no. But you can add one if you like. the gains are negligible in terms of power, but you get some nice throttle response.

I have yet to hear a confirmed yes or no to the removal of the stock speed limiter. Honestly though, unless you're on a track you really won't need to worry about a 110mph limiter. I'm also unsure of the rev limiter, but I would assume they bumped it up a few rpms. If you really want to I'm sure you could add an aftermarket chip with ONLY those tunes to remove the rev/speed limiter. You might want to check with Oscar Jackson or Ray @ McNews Automotive about that.

You can pretty much do most of the normal bolt-ons. Cams and head work will definitely be a no-no with the reflashed ECU.

I have heard of instances of air intakes causing a lean condition with the BBK. It would be wise to just get the BBK and wait on ANY other mods until you get the BBK installed and run it on a dyno with a wideband O2. Then you can start doing a few bolt-ons and see what happens.

Again, check with Oscar Jackson or Ray @ McNews Automotive about mods and the BBK.

The BBK is great for affordable, daily drivable power. It's not a powerhouse and it's a little limited because the tune really can't be changed, but if you're looking for about 175whp of streetable power: BIG BOOST KIT! Keep in mind 175whp is about 201bhp! That's an increase of 70hp over stock!!!

Thanks for the posts all. I can't wait until I get mine. I have one last question:

How fast is a Focus with the BBK? I am not as concerned with quarter mile performance as I am with 0-60 times, but both figures would be nice. Under six seconds to 60 mph would be great, but probably very optimistic. Is under 7.0 seconds a reasonable time to hit 60?

Thanks -

I am confirming the removal of the speed limiter...I was uhhhhhhh "out on the Bonneville Salt flats" and there is no speed limiter. The stock rev limiter is still used though.
(which really really sucks), it would be nice to have a few more RPM's. The power is there so you dont realize how fast the rev limiter comes up. But it is still at 6800 rpm's

Does the bbk ecu reflash replace the black box? Is a 14 et possible with bbk and boltons?

I can tell you my car is running solid 14.3's all day. If someone knows how to estimate 0-60 based on a 1/4 timeslip I'd be more than willing to offer some up. By having someone time me on a watch a few times I can tell you my 0-60 is in the 6-7 second territory.

Yes, the ECU reflash entirely replaces the black box.

Yes, I am 100% confident that you could easily lay down a sub-14.99 timeslip. With my 2.6" pullied (BBK is 2.5" = more power) JRSC I ran a best of 14.65. I would guess with the right driver the BBK could run right around 14.5.

Has anyone with the bbk have to reroute the belt like some of us have had to do?
That's what I'm wondering now

On shadowzx3's car....a 2003 ZX3 JRSC w/BBK kit....he had the first BBK available and the guys at Ford Racing put it on

The car seemed fine and was running great after they put it on.

But.....the stupid tensioner has a nub on it that is eating the belts right up.
So something ain't right.

We tried routing it with a 104.5" belt like the Ford Racing Tech Article said and it lasted for 4 months until the belt finally shredded to pieces (while driving I might add)

We replaced the belt and noticed the "nub" on the tensioner was scratching the belt leading to it's demise

So then we tried the old routing today hoping that might solve it with a 99.5" belt and the belt is waaaay to loose. So something isn't right and we still haven't figured out what to do.
I called Ford Racing & they told me to email their guy

here's the tech article about routing the belts:
http://www.fordracingparts.com/rbr/tech/files/FRPP_JRSC_Belt_Details.pdf

Any ideas of the right belt size?

(car has A/C I might add)
