Bought a 2005 Focus ZX4 SE. Considered buying a Mazda3 and a Volkswagen Jetta. I chose the Focus for these reasons:
1. Didn't like the styling of the Mazda3. A magazine article said it looked like an out-take from a Japanese anime production.
2. The VW's reliability record was unsettling.
3. I liked the revised styling of the 2005 Focus.
4. The Focus handles well, I find it very comfortable, it has reasonable pep and gets pretty good gas mileage.
So far I've added sheepskin seat covers for the front seats and replaced the not-so-good stock radio/CD-player with a Sanyo FXCD-550. It plays cassette tapes as well as CDs and was straightforward to install.
I'm considering buying a cold air intake or a short ram intake (specifically the Steeda) and possibly some suspension goodies. I didn't realize a rear anti-sway bar was not just a bolt-in proposition on the ZX4 SE (should've bought an SES instead!).
I think that in a place like LA, a cold-air intake will be much better for you than a short ram (and cheaper!), but the short ram has its advantages in very bad weather. Come hang out in Duratec Tuning if you feel like doing anything else to it.
