Hello,
Has anyone seen this yet. I'm surprised they went with Gushi. But, this is the Toyo car for next year.

"Ford Racing Unveils New Mustang Cobra Drift Car

A supercharged 4.6-liter 4-valve Cobra "Terminator" V8 engine powers Ford's 2005 Mustang GT drift car, which will race under the banner of Toyo Tires' Team Toyo. Piloted by 18-year-old Ken Gushi of Okinawa, the 500hp racer will compete in upcoming Formula Drift® Series and D1 Grand Prix races."

I didn't realize Ford wanted to get into the D1 Grand Prix so bad. It would be interesting to see the Mustang drifting at the pro level. I remember being in Fontana back in August at the D1 driver search and the few mustangs that were competing were not good. But, I remember one of the Japanese judges saying that it would be a good drift car if the driver was good enough.

Ken is a real great guy. Had the chance to meet him here in Chicago. Even though the guy is younger then me he seems very mature at times. Last time I saw him drifting (August) he didn't even have a valid license in the US

He ended up winning the RS*R Drift Event that I was attending there. Great guy and great to see Ford moving into this sport.

WTF?! I thought a drifting GTO and Viper were enough but now a Mustang? What's next the Corvette?

I don't see what's so weird about a high HP/high TQ RWD V8 powered car having anything to do with a type of racing that depends on massive oversteer.

Is it some kind of import-only thing?

If imports can be legit drag racers why not domestics involved with drift?

This car, as well as the GTO make MORE sense as a drift car than a 4 banger Nissan or Toyota.

Drifting is not racing. Plain and simple. Hell, it's not even a sport. I might consider it a pass-time, but to dump tons of cash into a car to look cool sliding around a corner pretty damn stupid. For the same amount of money you can go real racing, ie: The guy that drives the best and goes the fastest wins. I do not argue the point that these gentlemen are not talented, they are, but go rally'ing, or to an SCCA event, or even to the drag races. It's got nothing to do with Import vs Domestic, it's still a waste of money.

I wouldn't call it a waste of money. Sponsors are lining up, events are being sanctioned by well known organizations, plenty of people are taking notice.

What is and isn't sport? Sport is anything that inspires competition. It's something you must practice to do better in, something where there will be a winner and a loser.

This certainly qualifies. And fun? yes, looks like fun to me, but I've head plenty of people comment about the domestic presence and I've heard mostly moaning and groaning about it. To that effect I always say " You mean a Mustang or Camaro or some other American car has no place in drift but a Civic belongs on a drag strip??? "

Rediculous.

+1

I couldn't agree more with you

erm, nobody who likes drifting calls it "racing". is it a sport? yes. is it racing? no. there is a difference.

and why do these threads always turn into "drifting is stupid" threads? if you don't like drifting, you've probably already reminded us so just go post in another thread
