Least expensive Track 15\"ers?

I'm gonna go with the 15" storm wheels... but which tires to get... tryin to be on the cheap here.. cuz... well.. i'm really poor right now.

I'm thinking I'll be headed the 712 direction... but is there something better out there?

(yes I know I should be doing Rs.... but I just lost the freelance job I had... so funding is tighter than ever)

Rota Slipstream 15x7 if you can find the bolt pattern, with MX's or Victoracers if you want to lay out a bit more cash? Azenises are even cheaper than 712's but get greasy when hot. in a 2-driver car i get slippy with them at autocrosses.

vulcan tire has 205/50R15 for $62 each, still more but the tire is more. personally, i'm not impressed by the 712s. my all-season contiextremecontacts performed better IMHO.

Tirerack has 712s for $59... cheapest I can find the Falkens are $75....
With your growing level of experience Todd, the 712s are not remotely in the same discussion as a track tire. Why bother??

I need the least expensive quality stuff I can find right now...

My street tires are 711s... and I KNOW I can't run on those.... so I gotta get sumthin else.... but money is a BIG obstacle right now.

I ran on my 711's last weekend with not too much of a problem. The tires held up physically and don't show any excessive wear. Only thing was that they started to go away about 20 minutes into a 30 minute session. But it was a very gradual and minimal decrease in grip. Not anything that caught me by surprise. The car just went from pusing a little in 7 to pushing a little more in 7. And that was really the only place I noticed it.

Overall, they performed pretty damn well for a street tire. But then again, I'd imagine we don't have the same track temps you have.

Also keep in mind that I started out the weekend with less than 50% tread depth. I'm sure the fact that there was less tread to 'squirm around' and build up heat helped quite a bit.

I started out the day with 38psi cold in all four tires. The most pressure build up was in the left front. In all it was 44LF, 43RF, 42LR, and 41RR. The pressures remained like that for most of the weekend. The car felt pretty neutral except for that push in 7 and a little bit of push in 5.

So, if you're going out just to have fun and your 711's are at least 50% worn, I'd say just stick with them and have fun. Now if you're under the clock, I'd say go for either Azenis or Victoracers. The only problem I see with running new 712's on track is that you may see excessive heat build up from the tall tread blocks on new tires. IMHO, you'd be better off with worn out 711's instead of new 712's. You may have more initial grip with the 712's but the heat build up may come back to bite you in the ass.

Ok, enough rambling for today...

Re: Least expensive Track 15\"ers?

If budget's an issue, why not poke around for some used R-DOT's?

2 places I found in the back of GRM:
"Used Goodyear Racing Tires" 262.740.0180 (WI)
"Used Race Tires!" RC Enterprises 843.762.7324

As has been pointed out by our more resourceful comrades, one of the few advantages to be gained in Spec Miata is fresh sticky rubber. And their tires fit our cars...should be a reasonably good supply of lightly used stuff out there. Prob worth checking out Miata / Spec Miata boards.

Price aside, I've never understood the attraction with 712's. My very limited experience has found 'em to be...just kind of yucky. Maybe Yok AVS-ES100 if you're looking for a streety tire? Might still be able to find some old-style Yok AVSi's, which I thought were pretty nice on-track (for a cheapie street tire).

My $.02. I'll be expecting change...

Re: Least expensive Track 15\"ers?

You'll wear outs R's alot faster, and since most of the time we aren't going for a big prize, or prize at all, the gain isn't all that important. Plus he can work on maing cleaner lines instead of covering up mistakes accidently.

Preaching to the choir, Egz. I'm running street meat, and am a firm believer, too (to a point)...but aren't *you* the one running those oh-so-streety Azenis?

Offering options, not sure what he's looking for. Sounded like R's were out of the question b/c of cost only.

Azenis ARE street tires. I run them on the street, even now that they in places they don't even have as much semblence of tread as used Hoosier r3s03's
