Has anyone ever machined the stock flywheel to make it lighter? (Pro or Con)

Be EXTREMELY careful when doing this! If you take to much material out of the cast iron it could come apart under high stress.....and you really don't want that! I've seen it happen on a mustang at a local track when I was about 12 and the exploding flywheel took the guys right leg clean off!

And that's no BS. I would tend to think the cost of machine work would offset the cost of a new aluminum flywheel.

;) downside is that if its done wrong in the SLIGHTEST bit, you've got uncentered mass spinning around at 6500rpm.

Cem - Stick a piece of chewing gum on a ceiling fan sometime and watch how it starts to wobble at its whopping 100-200rpm. I think you can see where the problem may lay.

Honestly.... unless you trust your machine shop to CNC it with 100% accuracy.... considering there are lightweight options available from many of our sponsors..... I'd just buy an aftermarket piece that is proven to be balanced and tested.

You couldng lighten the stock flywheel buy removing some of the mass that's around very ouside of the flywheel. I just replaced mine with a fidanza and noticed that the fidanza didn't have this mass around the outside like the stocker does. If you have seen them side by side you will know what i'm talking about. Have that machinrd off and then have it rebalanced. should take off a good amount of weight with out weakening the center section at all. Might make for a nice in between weight flywheel. I know this is what alot of the older volkswagen guys do.

I agree with CWCZX3. It should be safe to take some weight off of the outside of the flywheel. I am not sure of the diameter of one, but it would take a really large lathe. Does the stock one have any balancing holes drilled in it? If so, you might need a way to balance it, like an old fashioned wheel balancer.

you do know that the flywheel is lined up with your legs/crotch right and im sure you don't want either of them being taken off right there isn't much in between you and that bomb waiting to happen don't be cheap/stupid just by a fidanza you will LOVE it trust me

And once again, the cost of machining the stock flywheel to your liking is likely as much or more $ than buying an aftermarket flywheel that works...

i've seen it done and even done it myself in a shop. however, if i were to be doing this, i would either do it myself or go by a new one. i wouldn't trust anyone else with my legs. i would just say to go get a new one cause you never know when the guy in the shop is having a bad day and decides to shortcut through your project and screws it up.

I agree with everyone else. Just buy a new lightweight flywheel, your really taking a chance with your life\limbs = not worth the risk.
