Looking to make the inside glow

1003 Views 38 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  mY sHoE
Hey guys, I am looking to make the inside of my car glow with a bluewish color. I have not seen any post on that cause I think it is relatively unique thing. Does anyone know or can think of a good way to make this possible so that while my car is running, I can get this but can turn off when the car is turned off or with a switch? Actually a switch would be better.

Let me know, thanks...

neon under the seats( licence plate frames) under the dash will give you the glow, just need to hook them up toa switch. No problems

OK I want to look into all of that but do you have a way I "can" do that. I am new at this so I don't know quite, what i am doing.

I would like to know what I need to do to achieve the end result if that makes any sense. I will probably be doing this on my own and I don't have any experience with it.
OK i just got done doing this to my 2000 zx3 hatchback. I have two neo-blue 9 inch streetglow rods under the dash hanging in sight above the pedals and the same on the passenger side. They put enough light out for the front area i also have my dome light blue. i got the dome light blue by putting blue selafane(spelling) in the plastic. The more plastic the darker the dome light. I drilled a hole for the switch by my shifter i can fit 6 switches 3 on each side and it should look nice i have 2 swtiches so far. i will be hooking up my undercar kit next. I have noticed one little thing the back area behind the front seats is very dark still. I hope to add some lights there as well. sorry for the ugly grammar but its late and i have to hurry.
Well I like the idea of having lights on the underside of my dash but I guess I want to make sure that I tap into the right wires and make sure that I hide the wiring... I don't want anything exposed and also a professional job. Does anyone have any schematics or anything or know where I can find that?
not to be an ass, or sound like a dick, but it's not too unique, a lot of people have done it.... but it is a very sick mod... and will probly never be played out.
Anyways, someone will give you a detailed step-by-step shortly... but the only wire tapping you are going to have to do is cut into the wires from each neon tube and run it to the switch, then run a wire from the switch to the battery... pretty much it..... it's not too hard to hide wires, depends on where you put your switch... I have my switch on the inside fuse box cover, very discrete and easy to run wire to.... someone will give u a better description soon.

Also not to be mean but, I am intrigued, if everyone has done it and it will never play out why do you think it is so bad? Is this something you have tried and it never played out for you?
yeah the whole neons in the inside is pretty common. i had lights all throughout my car until i had a little mishap and ripped it all out.some how one of my wires that had power to it touched a ground and cought on fire now i have a big ass whole in the drivers seat and no more lights. i will be getting more put in just gonna go and pay someone to do it, ill feel more comfortable that way.so once again if your gonna do it yoursalf make sure eveything is good and nothing is exposed.

after u do it buy some diamond plate floor mats!!! that will brighten it up even more.

when I say "it will never get played out" I mean it will never get old, it will never turn bad..... It's a good thing... I should have explained my ebonics first, sorry

i have 12 neons in my interior...lots of people do this....yeah, it does look cool, and yeah, it is kind of difficult if you're inexperienced.

if you don't know what you're doing, it's not a good iea to plunge headfirst into heavy electric work. get someone with experience and learn, then go back and do it yourself later.
Okay, i'll try to describe the wiring real quick.

First, find out how many neons you want. one under each seat, (I have mine attached to the front horizontal post, not sitting on the floor) and one under each side of the dash.
You may want more. The cool thing about neons is that they require almost no amperage to run. You will need a DC/AC converter, however. I recommend you mount that under the dash, away from the stereo (it can introduce noise into the stereo)

So install the lights where you want them. Be careful about where your feet go, they do break.

Now you have lights in your car, and need to start the wiring. Pull the fuse panel off, and drop the lower part of the dash ( i think 8mm bolts). you should have a few AC/DC converters. Take the recieving ends (not the ones that go into the lights) and cut the stupid cigarette lighter part off. Note which wire is +, and -. you will need this.

attach all the + together, and all the - together. using a butt splice, attach each end to another wire, and then on the - side crimp on a ring terminal (lug) of a good size for a ground bolt. I used a ground bolt on the metal ring outside the fuse box. The positive wire i tapped into the "dimmer switch" so that i can control the lights with my other lights. You want to use a switch, so you may want to use a male spade terminal and just "plug it in" to a port that is hot when the car is on, and off when the car is off. In this line, attach a switch, so you also have manual control. Mount the switch in a discreet location if you want.

Now you have switched power, on an ignition switch, coming to your converters. Just plug the terminals that come with the neons into the converters, and conceal all the wiring (in a safe manner).

easy easy.

tons of neon lights!
Thanks demon for the massive explanation. I guess my next question for the group because I am new to doing this myself, is there a good site where I can find the electrical drawings of the cars I have a visual idea of what I am looking at?
dood u dont need an electrical drawing at all. It is prob one of the simplest mods to do.
To you maybe simple but to me I like to play it safe. Remember when I go up under I don't really know what I am looking at... I don't know of anyone around here that can sit with me while I do that so I want to cover all my basis.
Go to an auto part store and grab a blue bulb that goes in your dome light. That's what I did.

I want a steady light for the entire time I am in the car. I don't want to have to turn my dome light on each time... I know it is simple enough but I want more.
