First off, congrats to being a new Focus driver, I'm sure you'll see that [FJ] is more like a family than anything else, so hopefully you'll feel right at home here
Well, for starting-off mods, it all depends on if you're concerned about 'show' or 'go' in the beginning. If it was me, I'd start off with the easy stuff, like a nice CAI (cold air intake), a catback exhaust (actually it's flex pipe-back, but oh well), and possibly the SVT suspension kit or H&R Cup Kit if you have the extra cash. If you're wanting to do 'pretty' show mods first, the Euro ST170 headlights are GORGEOUS, you could match those with a nice Euro upper and lower grille and have a very clean front end. Good luck with the modding, and remember, whatever you do, do it because you like it, not because everyone else thinks it's cool!

Im working with $800 so far
Im assuming since your in Zetec tuning, you want to go faster. Heres what I would do with $800.

MAC shorty intake - $95
Ported Stock TB - You can do this one your self or I can sell you one and give you a core credit $65 - 20 core = $45
MBRP Exhaust - Its the only wagon exhaust left and the price is right - $199
FocusSport Race Header/Flex Combo - $459

$798 Total

Your car will sound awesome, have a nice performance gain, great throttle response, and you'll build a good foundation on which to start. All prices are quoted from Massive Speed System
(except MBRP, go direct to MBRP.com) .

If you can spare a few more bucks, get some Energy Suspension motor mount inserts ($18)(unless its an auto... then only if you dont care about lots of vibration). Next would be an underdrive pulley ($98).

$800, heres what i'd do.

Port your Throttle Body - $6

you can look up how to do it somewhere on thease fourms or check your local area fourm and i'm sure someone that lives around you knows how to do it and if you ask them nicely, they might help you =)

buy a cheap intake off ebay- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-04-Foc...007607659QQrdZ1
price with shipping - 33 bucks

the only reason i'd say go with that is cause i baught a really cheap short ram one off ebay and absolutly love it. you could get one of the CAI ones, but i live in colorado so hydrolock is acctully a major fear of mine sence boulder is so hilly, and tends to have HUGE puddles.

Next i'd get headers, and this will have to depend on weather or not you have emmissions testing or not. if you don't get the long race headers, if you do, get shortys or the SVT header.personally in my situaion where i live, i'd go with shorty headers. and OBX has been getting alot of good reviews lately and the price is deffnately right

OBX Shorty Headers - $155 + 25 Shipping

MBRP Catback - 199 + (around) 50 Shipping
^^sence thats the only catback you can get^^

Crank Pulley - 50-90 + 10 Shipping

last i'd look at getting an SCT Chip, which is $300. its been agreed by pretty much everyone that thease kick ass. so:

SCT Chip - $300 http://focussport.com/chips.htm

that puts you at:
$837

a little over but if you threw all those in i'm sure you'd be increadbly estatic about the results.

after your done with all those i'd start looking at
1) Lowering your car
2) Maybe putting on a bit of exterior Flair if you don't want it to be a sleeper.
3) Forced Induction or Cams + Cam gears.

This is what I have done with mine so far. I still have to intall my F2 RS front bumper and Wings West side skirts which I have them at home. I've done a lot to the interior including bucket sits, custom paint, gauges, sound system, and a lot more. I'm making a site just for her.

What, praytell, is that on your antenna?

My personal thoughts are to stay as far away from ebay knock offs. In general they are of inferior quality, have non existant customer service, and worst of all are (poor) copies of real products people worked hard to engineer. If we dont support the people who design, engineer, and develop these products, who will be left coming up with new ideas?
Suspension would be my first mod if I c ould do it all over again. A KYB damper/ Eibach spring combo could be done for roughly $500 new from ebay.

UDPs and Shorty headers are wastes of time and money..if you did both, you might make 3hp.

Things to consider

-Raceheader or SVT header w/ RT hi-flo cat
-exhaust w/ matching flex
-SCT chip especially if you have an auto
-port your intake mani and tb (you might have the good one piece intake manifold..if so, port it, if not, get one and port it)

The for-sale forum is your friend
good luck

It's a Wagon, so get a suspension. After that, get a CIA or Short Ram (depending on your area with water concerns), get a header, as stated multiple times before, Race header or SVT header, exhaust w/ flex and a throttle body (porting your intake manifold to match. You will notice an extreme difference in handling, throttle response and power gain. Also, like TwoLiters said, get the SCT, especially if you have an Auto... Good Luck and happy modding!!
Zetec or SPI (zetec tuning, I know, but assumptions = the enemy)? Automatic or manual?
The SVT suspension will only work for the front half, so be aware. The back half of the wagon suspension is very different, so look for that when shopping.

#2, you shouldn't have a sad face at the end of your post...any car given to you should be a good thing unless it is something that would cost less to blow up than sell. There are some pretty sweet looking wagons.

An intake was my first mod. I am partial to Volant, but they all offer about the same gains. Baltimore gets some crazy winter, so maybe stay away from AEM style intakes. Wheels and tires would be around $800 if you buy them new (check out for sale forum). If you want to save the $800 for a rainy day, the JRSC/BBK supercharger is $2800 and it will net you about 175 hp/155 tq or the FS/VF supercharger that is $3000 and will net similar gains.

Manual or Auto??

Sorry but short ram intakes are the biggest scam there is. Why not buy one on ebay for $33 instead of paying $200 for the same thing with red paint and an AEM sticker? We don't all have that kind of money for a 1-2 hp gain.
Short rams DO work quite well. They arent a scam at all. If you read my post, you'll see that I recommended a MAC intake at $95, not 200. I think AEM short rams are great, but they are priced rather high. No intake is going to make you ton of power, period. It will help to allow you to make more power down the road.

I think the biggest freakin scam are people that thoughtlessly buy plain and simple copies of other peoples innovation with no remorse. Im really sick of how people are so complimentary of folks like FocusSport, AEM, HKS, JBA, etc. and then go and by a blatant copy of their products on ebay. These are the people spending their hard earned money, time, and expertise to design the products that make tuning our cars fun and possible, and then so many people turn around and slap them in the face and buy a rip off made in China cuz' they saved a couple bux. Save your money and buy the real thing. If not for quality sake, for the morality.

Sorry you are right. It's my fault for not reading very well.

But seriously, how much quality control and development goes into bending a piece of metal pipe? I'm serious, why do intakes cost $200+? That is indeed a rip off. You can't tell me the material cost that much? I can go to a near by metal shop and buy a piece of pipe for a few bucks and get it bend so it fits. Why does it cost these companies so much that they have to charge $200 for the same? Sounds like a pretty big profit margin. Maybe they don't sell enough of them to be able to afford a lower profit margin. You say for morality sake but how is it moral to sell a $2.00 pipe for $200? It seems a little fishy to me.

We'll use an AEM Zetec Long tube as an example here because I have one sitting here next to me.

Box contents:

Instructions - Just paper, but it took time and effort to write them, and also ensure that the install is the same on all models/trans'/bodystyles/and years. That costs money.

Tag Frame - Purchased in quantity, it maybe only costs .75 cents. But they had to lay out the $10,000 to order that many at a time. Thats not always easy.

Hose Clamps - 6 All Stainless steel Norton or BREEZE US Made brands. Even though they buy millions of these, they still cost at least good money. Ebay intakes use garbage nickel plated steel that rust and rarely ever offer any actual clamping force. Again, they do they cheaper in quantity, but they had lay out 5 figures to get that price.

Hardware - 2 Nyloc nuts, 2 washers. Nothing complex here. About .50 cents.

Vibration mounts - Purhased in qauntity, about $1.00 a piece. Agian, large capital investment to get them at a reasonable price.

Torx Key - $1.00. Nice of them ot think to include it. For removing the MAF electronics from the stock housing.

18" 5/8" Breather hose - Quality Gates US stuff. Bought in bulk, probably .50 cents, agian, they probably bought $1000's at a time to make it affordable.

3 1/4" - 2.5" Reduction Elbow - This is an AEM piece, not off the shelf. Im guessing they mold these in house. Theres quite a few machines needed to make these: A sinking EDM maybe. A good ones $100,000. A bunch of graphite will be used to make the impression maybe a couple a hundred, which would have been machined by a big CNC machining center, $100,000 there (you'll need to have several electrodes, a rough, and then several finishing to make the piece) a big piece of hardened steel for the die, $200-500. An injection molding machine. $100,000. And dies dont last forever, the break down over time, so this cost is not neccesarily a "one time only". The raw material - the rubber itself probably breaks down to .50 cents individually, again, when purchased in large quantity.

Vinyl Decals - 2. Maybe .50 cents a piece. They had to buy alot of these too for that money.

2.5" Aluminum Tubing - About 4 Feet of it in this CAI. Even purchased in quantity, this stuff still costs several dollars a foot. I wouldnt doubt $3-4 per foot.

Bending - The last time i checked, the cheapest mandrel bender Addison McKee had was about $150,000. Your local exhasut shop DOESNT have one of these.

Brackety - 2, about 10" between the two, about a buck worth of material.

Bending - at very least a good hand brake, maybe $5000.

MAFS port - 1/2" thick by 3" by 2" aluminum stock. $1.50 here. Again, you need a machining center, $100,000. You'll also have had to design this part on your CAD system, (AUTOCAD is a couple grand) and a CAM system to drop the file into your machine, ESPIRIT runs abou $6000 for their 6 Axis software. A good computer $500. Drill and tap a few holes.

5/8" Tubing - About an inch for the breather - .20 cents in qauntity. You need to cut a whole bunch of these in qauntity, a big automated bandsaw would do. $5000.

Robotic Welding - Im not even sure on this one... But alot.

Filter - This is probably just a K&N piece. But im sure even in large quanitity its about 15-20 a piece.

Polishing - This ones polished, others a re powder coated, either way, more tools and cost involved.

CARB certification - This takes a long time and alot of money. 10-50,000.

And there ya have it. And then you have:

Wages - Operators for all that machinery get paid. Ussually, quite well, because they are skilled. You'll also pay taxes as their employer. You've also got people in the office, programmers, warehouse staff, advertising, etc. If one guy makes $45,000 a year, you'll pay another, i dunno, 5-10 in money to the gov thats not even part of their paycheck.

Prototyping - Anyone thats ever made something knows that the first version of something is rarely the last. You;ve got to try things and make mistakes so the final product is good. That process is costly! Spending the time to properly engineer something that not only fits, but is easy to install, looks good, and acctually performs is probably the costiest single investment of these!

Insurance - A company like AEM pays a bunch on operating insurance. I'll venture to say $100000 a year.

Your facility - Im sure AEM's rent or mortgage is in the 5 figures every month. You'll need a big space to house all that stock you had to buy in quantity to get a good deal.

Consumables -

Taxes - If you have ANY inventory at the end of the year, its taxed like its income. I'll bet you AEM has a couple million in inventory at any one time. So maybe another couple hundred grand to the gov.

Utilities - Between gas, electric, heat, water, sewer, dumpsters, phone, internet, etc, im sure theres another $10,000 a month.

Advertising - Easy 1,000,000 a month for AEM. Im sure there racing teams are not working for free either.

The list goes on and on. At the end of the day, AEM has to make a profit too to stay in business. Thats what a business is all about.

And your telling me $200 is alot for an intake.

The reality is , thats the cost of doing business.
See less See more
Well, as I said the largest cost is engineering, development, prototyping. When you simply copy someone else's design, that stage is pretty much non existant. So theres a big savings... and of course, the products are made in Communist China by laborers paid less than .50 cents and hour... And all the manufacturing is government subsidized (read: were not competing with private firms, were competing with government funded/owned businesses).

And we all know how the Chinese goverment feels about us. And the huge trade deficit. And the way they're testing nuclear weapons all the time.

No freakin way am I buying that sh - t unless I have too.
