So hopefully next week I'll be getting my 04' Pitch Black SVT 5door. Here's what I've got coming:

New Edge : ORP w/cheater harness, VF Rear mount

Ebay : CARB legal cold air kit , New Pioneer 7800MP stereo w/4 68xx speakers & IP Bus cable for plugging in the iPod.

On the waiting list are : SCT Xcal2 or Diablosport Predator (Jury is still out), Wheel locks (cos I dunno if they are already on), HID bulb conversion or all new Projectors with halo's.

All told I'll be putting about $1k into the car, getting it for a very decent price too. Been walking, bus, and train ing it everywhere the past week....I want my SVT!

Anyone see anything wrong with this ???

"Hey I have an idea, I'll completely remove the Cat Converter and bypass the O2 sensor, oh and I'll get an emissions legal intake!!.... yea yea that's the ticket" :D :p

hey man if you want to keep it CARB legal, check out cfm and random tech. for some high flow cats. And dont trust what they say on eBay for keeping it CARB legal.

if your getting the vf mount, try a Steeda Tri/AX Short throw shifter. they are a match made in heaven. And i dont know anything about stereos so i cant help ya there.

Yeah Belay I know I'm a rookie, great job pointing out the obvious. Animated thumbs up goes here.

Think I'm better off with a cold air kit anyways, and if its already CARB legal, when I need to smog the car ,all I have to put back on it the cat. Since I'm going to be under the car anyways when I'm putting in the rear mount why not put in the ORP?

Do I have to smog the car all the time...drumroll please....NO. Does it help to have the cold air intake in all the time....YES. So maybe the cold air kit may not need to be CARB legal afterall since I can swap at will. "But what about when you get pulled over and they look under the hood?" you ask....I'm sure I could talk my way into a fix it ticket rather than an full CHP reaming.

Maybe I'll skip the intake all together and go with the Steeda short shift kit. Maybe I'll change my mind and leave it all STOCK (heaven forbid). Options like that are why I came to the community on focaljet for input.

So for those who are here to help, you rock. For those who have an ass for a life and use forums like this for self esteem building, I feel sorry for ya.

I think you need to chill. Bela was just pointing out the obvious discrepancy in you line of thought. You want a carb intake, but you want to get rid of the cat.

And watch out for the CHP. They aren't all car stupid. I had one pick out all my mods pretty quick, but he's a mustang club member and just told me to watch out. (I have the CARB cold air and ORP like you want). And if you get mouthy with them like you are with us.....

#8 ·
Mouthy, HA! Its called defending myself, please dont say I cant be "brutally honest" too. Again I came seeking help and someone got mouthy with me. Whats up with keeping Everybody in check?
Ive dealt with the law on good and bad terms. I have law enforcement in my family and closest friends.
When I was caught dead to rights being too speedy, I didnt backtalk the officer, I took my citation m,and when it came to traffic court at 8am after having gotten home at 5am from work, I handled it. Other times when the officer didnt have much to work with, I drove off with nothing out of my pocket but some lost time.
Next I'll be told on here to watch my tone. So before that happens lets A) Remember what freedom of speech and patently offensive language is and b) Stay on topic (thanks O2smurf for going back in that direction).

Now, who else has input?

What's the need to defend yourself? He saw something funny and brought it up. :what: unless your defending the idea that you want to be legal and break the law at the same time.

And actually if you want to get technical it's a private board and your freedom of speech is limited here. ;)

And as for "going back in that direction," you started it.

I'm just yankin ya, I'd kick my own butt if I wanted a Cobalt. You know us bleeding heart liberals, always stirring the pot. Speaking of stirring....you think its imopssible to get a decent SVT to 200hp N/A without going built motor?

#14 ·
For me, building it up is everything under the cams. So port polish/match heads, new pistons/rods, balanced & blueprinted. Are there retail cams for the SVT or is tricky because of the variable valve timing & DSI?

#15 ·
well if you shop around on some overseas sites, they have cams for the ST170 which is basically the same car is the SVT in the US. but from what i know, cfm may be making cams and a ported/ polished head for the SVT if im not mistaken, but its still under developement. Now i dont know if those cams would be boost friendly or not. Most likely it would be geared toward the all motor aspect of the cars.

Although the sound of the blow off valve is entertaining, and feeling PULLED along by the boost is exhilirating, I'd want to stick with N/A for now. I guess the reality is what it is. Haha, maybe in like 2010 I'll get the 2007/08 MazdaSpeed 3!

He isn't referring to a "lashing" as you put it. He's referring to David(Bela)'s real-life experiences with this car. He probably has seen more of the good and bad in the SVTF than most of us combined. Value his experience and knowlege. Be kind and you will receive kindness and vice-versa.

I have to say that if you want to spend ~$1k on the car, here is the "dream" list:

*Rear Mount ~$140 new
*STS ~$70 new
*FRPP/FS plug wires ~$40-80
*ORP ~$140 new
*TUNE(do eet do eet) ~$400 DON'T SKIMP ON THIS STEP--Give Randy a call@ FS
Total: ~$790-830

So far my pricing has been:

ORP : $100
Rear Mount: $100
STS: $140

Where'd you price that STS @? Not sure if I'll get the plug wires, the car is under 35k miles and in theory the plug wires are decent until 50k mi. And if I got those I'd want new plugs but which ones? Ford Platinums, Bosch Platinums, Ford Coppers???

Unless I hear more good/bad/ugly about Diablosport, I'll end up with Xcal2 cuz thats what I had before. Again I just wanted to get as much info as possible before swiping the charge card.

Wow.. guess I missed alot after my smart ass remark and then not coming back in

Dude you took it WAY to seriously! When someone puts this icon :p, that means they are teasing you. So relax, kick back, grab whatever drink it is you prefer and just CHILL ;)

Now on to the boosted thing, yea I've pretty much done most everything to my car aside from internal changes.

Definately stick with NA as long as you can enjoy it. Boost is fun for sure, but boosting the SVT is a nightmare for many reasons.

As for the mounts, the dogbone mount (rear mount) is a tranny mount and while it will add some extra work for the front mounts, it shouldn't be anything to worry about. Dont change the front mounts unless you're ready for a race car type feel and vibration. I have all 3 and while I love it, most find it difficult for daily drivers.

Last note:
Spat's list is pretty good, but I would stay away from the Iridium plugs and the 8.5mm wires.
The SVT's wires are good and have no problem keeping up with even upgraded ignition systems.
The Iridium plugs while great "marketing" upgrades are dangerous. The tips can break off and well that just sucks hehe. Keep with the stockers, and no matter what you do, if you do change, stick with copper plugs. The iridium, platinum and so on (plugs) aren't all they are made out to be.

Since you're in Cali, have you thought about getting the random tech high-flow cat? The gains are similar to the ORP and from what I've read it keeps the car legal. Just a thought. I don't have any experience with the high flow cat, but I loooove the ORP.

The rear mount is a glorious mod, it improves the shift feel 200%.

As far as the ebay CAI, you'll probably notice a tone change more than a power change (although, it is a pleasant tone change :) )

#25 ·
Thought about it, but for the difference in price I'll stick with the ORP. Technically I dont think the high flow cat is CARB legal in California. If I'm wrong someone tell me. But I'd rather save a few hundred bucks if it only takes me 15min to swap the ORP for the SVT cat if I was persuaded to by johnny law.
