Go to autozone and ask for a code reader, then look in yer Haynes/Chitlins' manual (you DO have one of those, right?!?!) and just check the code, then go from there.
If you wanna go above and beyond, look for hardcopies of the Mechanical and Electrical/Vacuum books off of ebay. They cost a pretty penny, but a 4th grader could do the work with the instructions and illustrations they give in the factory manuals. I have a set for my GT, I wouldn't trade 'em for anything.
Good idear ol' chap! He can probably get the sensor for you at cost, just to lessen the blow, should the sensor be the issue.
OR! you could just get a chip and have the entire egr system turned off
