WASHINGTON - Federal safety officials are investigating 2000-01 Ford Focus cars to determine whether a fuel tank defect causes them to begin stalling after owners have driven about 30,000 miles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it suspects that some material from the tank's interior collects on a pump screen and cuts off fuel.

The agency said unexpected hesitation or stalling is a safety hazard. The agency said it is aware of 72 complaints, seven involving crashes. About 575,000 vehicles are in service.

The agency, in a separate case, said it is probing whether brake and accelerator pedals are mounted too closely on 2000-01 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable cars equipped with adjustable pedals. There are 400,000 on the road.

NHTSA said 22 owners have reported they have repeatedly and unintentionally pressed the accelerator while stepping on the brake. The complaints include reports of five crashes.

NHTSA also is probing drivers' front airbags in the 2002 Nissan Xterra for possible electrical shorts in the steering column's clock spring or airbag module. A Nissan service bulletin and one complaint alerted the agency. About 20,000 vehicles are in service.

The agency reported other new cases, most involving electrical fires:

2000 FORD FOCUS

Problem: Fire occurs near battery in engine compartment.

Complaints: Seven, including three from an insurance company.

Vehicle population: Not determined.

1998-2000 KIA SEPHIA

Problem: Battery cable shorts out on dipstick tube, causing a fire.

Complaints: Six, plus seven other fires of undetermined origin.

Vehicle population: 134,000.

1997 NISSAN MAXIMA

Problem: Fire originates at the alternator.

Complaints: Five.

Vehicle population: 123,000.

1996 VOLVO 850; 1997 VOLVO S70, V70

Problem: Fire erupts from front seats, possibly from power adjustment mechanism or seat heater.

Complaints: Five.

Vehicle population: To be determined.

2002 CHEVROLET TRAILBLAZER, GMC ENVOY, OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA

Problem: Pinching, chafing or cutting of steering-column wiring disables various instrument and control functions.

Complaints: None; NHTSA was alerted by a technical service bulletin.

Vehicle population: 200,000.

Yep, they redesigned it. I had mine already replaced at 25K...

Re: NHTSA investigates Ford Focus for stalling

One of reasons why I did not want third ZX3 was it's "unfinished" design.
Hesitation/staling was one of those issues that Ford had no clue how to deal with.
Squeaking brakes and soft easy to wrap rotors were too much to handle, my dealer at the time sais "I know but there is nothing I can do".
Brakes on brand new car (around 10K miles) were in really bad shape (rotors begin to wrap and front pads were 70% done with rear shoes replaced
and needing oiling every 1000 miles so they would not squeak!!!
Again, it's a shame that finally good potentialy great car from Ford got so cheapend by Ford NA and it's cheap attitude.
Maybe next gen. will be designed/assembled with more attention to detail. I still think that next Mazda3 will be a better deal (more refined engine, similiar great suspension and most likely better assembly quality/warranty/re-sale value)
It's very disapointing, Ford could be in so much better position with Focus.

It's my understanding from reading _Automotive News_ and other car magazines that the next gen Focus will have the same engines as the Mazda 3. It is sad, though, that Ford has let their quality slip. When I bought my Contour, Ford still had a better quality record than Mazda (which ranks well below Toyota and Honda).

Re: NHTSA investigates Ford Focus for stalling

Mazda3's engine will be a better version of the same 2.3l Duratec that Focus will get.
Mazda will use S-vt technology while Focus will not = better fuel economy, more hp, smoother operation.
Mazda's build in Japan are build as well as Toyota, Nissan etc.
Mazda build in US is a step below in overall assembly quality (626 is famous for it's lack of assembly quality)
Let's wait and see, maybe Focus and Mazda3 will get the same version of 2.3 and to top it off we'll all get Direct Injection!!!???

Oh Jesus! The guys over in Edmund's Townhall are going to have a field day with this. Seems like I've heard a decent amount of people with fuel pump problems though. If there really is a problem, I wonder what the fix would be? New fuel tanks? Different fuel pump and filter?

Re: NHTSA investigates Ford Focus for stalling

i cant really understand all of this, you american guys complaint about everything!!!!!!!! please what's the deal with the pedals on the taurus???? gimme a break, first learn how to drive, then buy a car not the other way arround, i would love to see something like this in europe!!!!!!!!! pedals are close for heel-toe action (i know the taurus is auto but you have to be very stupid to blame a company for that)and if you dont like that why they bought the car in the first place!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Re: NHTSA investigates Ford Focus for stalling

PATO: people complain because this fuel pump issue is NOT cool at all, borderline dangerous at times, and i don't think its fair all the arguing (and in some cases, wasting of money) people have done to get this fuel pump issue fixed on their cars. regarding the Taurus, i don't know, although it may have something to do with my suspicion that people who buy Tauruses are IJAC's through and through, and can't drive to begin with.

now, everyone else, how easy is it for me, and everyone else with this problem who either has yet to deal with it, or is in the process of dealing with it, to report this to the NHTSA?

i don't care if another recall is nationally announced, if it makes it that much easier for me to get a permanent fix, then so be it.

EDIT: nevermind, i found it, NHTSA Complaint Form, there's a form you can fill out.
