DETROIT  --  Nissan North America is bringing a car smaller than the Sentra to its U.S. lineup within the next two years. Its latest concept for such as car draws a bead on Toyota’s Scion lineup.

Nissan’s Sport Concept hatchback is marked by wide body flares over 20-inch wheels, a rear spoiler and a sloping, angled hood. The concept was shown Thursday night at Nissan’s new design studio in suburban Detroit -- even though the vehicle was created at the automaker’s design studio in Atsugi, Japan. The concept gets wide exposure next week during the New York auto show.

The concept, which has some resemblance to the Nissan Tiida sedan sold in Japan, is based on the automaker’s B-segment platform. Yet Nissan says it was designed to comfortably fit four passengers.

The concept measures 171.3 inches from bumper to bumper. That puts it within a couple of inches of the Scion tC coupe, and 6 inches shorter than the current Sentra. But the concept’s 102.4-inch wheelbase tops the Sentra’s wheelbase by nearly 3 inches.

Inside, each passenger gets their own seat with large side bolsters, raised center section in the seat bottom and integrated, four-point seatbelts. The stereo system includes a large speaker and subwoofer mounted in the rear parcel shelf.

The Sport Concept is the third that Nissan has shown over the past 18 months offering different looks at injecting some style to its small-car lineup. The earlier concepts were the wagon-like Actic and the sporty Azeal coupe.

I would go out today and buy it if it was available for under $20,000. Of course, I do hope it gets a great engine, maybe a QR25DE with a better flowing head and a 7,000 Rev limit...pushing close to 190 little ponies would be great for this car. Definately has to be a 6 speed.

BUT, it is competing with the Scion so...maybe a QR20DE that pushes 145 ponies with a rev limit of 7,000, 6 speed.

What are they planning on calling it???

At least it isn't a box. To bad this won't sway Ford's mind into giving us Fiesta instead of the SynUS type thing.

They just need to put a decent motor in there, make it sporty, and lose the 20's in favor of 16's or maybe 17's. And make sure someone that's 6'6" can drive it comfortably with a helmet on. And make the &)@(#*)(@*#) sunroof OPTIONAL if it's going to have one. I wish it was an option on the tC. I might be looking at them more seriously...

OOooh me likey!

But, here are the requirements: Needs to have a decent suspension, needs to have a powerful engine (think Cobalt SS/ SRT-4, etc), and needs to be cheap.

As long as they can do that, I'm happy.

That super fancy interior, 20" wheels, and other misc "fluff" can go to meet that price, which it will likely need to.
because the whole point of th tC is to have the panoramic top.
It is? I didn't realize it was such a "focused" car...

That is one sweet looking car. Hey.....I just remembered that Nissan Design America is literally down the street from where I work. I may have to go take a peek over their 8 foot black fence that surrounds the property.

its too hot. no really. hopefully they don't limit themselves too much. I imagine production will be much tamer but it is nice to see a car company actually pay attention to what people want.

I actually really like it. The front end resembles the Nissan Murano(which i love). I bet it will be in the high teens low 20k range and i bet they dump the sentra for this.

That car is soooo good looking! I would buy one right now if it were available! It would have to look exactly like that though...no watering down allowed.
